Chapter Ninety-Eight: Nen Abilities, Little Pills, and the Remnant Mechanism
Although Nitrogen could sense the energy contained within the Spirit Light Jade, he had no clear understanding of the specific effects it had when used by someone else. Overconfident and careless, he failed to consult a medical Nen user, and as a result, Haoren died.
Cradling Haoren’s stiffened body, Nitrogen sighed deeply. Such a promising young man had vanished right before his eyes.
The chairman, who could not see this directly, noticed that the electronic Arabic numeral “3” on Haoren’s forehead changed to “2.”
“Hmm?” The chairman raised an eyebrow at the anomaly, gently placing Haoren on the ground to observe quietly.
Life gradually returned to Haoren’s body. His heart resumed beating, his body temperature rose, and his breathing steadied. Strangely, Haoren’s tattered body began to heal bit by bit.
“This is truly…” Although he had lived over a hundred years, the old man was still deeply moved by the scene before him.
The centenarian instinctively attributed Haoren’s revival to abilities like feigning death or rapid healing.
Nitrogen, who held a profound respect for the natural cycle of birth, aging, sickness, and death, did not believe that resurrection—an act defying natural laws—could exist in the natural world.
Though Haoren’s body was restored, his skin remained flushed red, clearly showing that the Spirit Light Jade was still exerting its intended effect.
“Ahhhhhhh!”
Haoren’s screams erupted again, filled with robust energy.
The chairman smiled warmly and stepped aside to enjoy Haoren’s harrowing performance of screaming, thrashing on the ground, and pounding the walls.
Four more hours passed.
For the other examinees, those twenty-seven hours were agonizing. The incessant screams, like demonic chants, and the occasional shaking of the vessel kept them from resting properly. Although it paused briefly, the noise soon resumed.
The examiners and candidates protested in various ways but were effortlessly dismissed by the chairman’s subtle commands.
Unable to resist, they resigned themselves to self-hypnosis.
Fortunately for the candidates, after twenty-seven grueling hours, the shaking and screaming finally ceased. With only seven hours left before reaching the third phase testing venue, they had to seize the opportunity to rest.
A large group of candidates, their eyes shadowed with dark circles, collapsed onto the ground in scattered exhaustion.

“Grandpa Chairman, here is the recipe.” Haoren handed the detailed notes he had spent half an hour preparing directly to the chairman. He wrote everything meticulously, though whether anyone could replicate it was not his concern.
“Oh ho ho ho~ Though I haven’t been much help, the old man is thick-skinned. I’ll gladly accept your kind offering,” the chairman said with a self-satisfied grin, accepting Haoren’s gift. Having provided the room himself, he considered this a form of assistance.
“Well then, Chairman, I’ll rest now. I won’t disturb you further.” Haoren bowed respectfully to the centenarian expert and then left.
Clutching the key the chairman had given him, Haoren entered the single room on the airship.
On the desk inside the room lay a tray holding a tall glass filled with a clear liquid, a single leaf floating on its surface.
Unable to find clean water at the moment, Haoren had substituted sake from the porcelain bottle by his bedside. It should be fine.
Haoren clasped the glass with both hands, and a faint white halo suddenly enveloped him.
Water-seeing Style.
Under the stimulation of his Nen, the leaf floating on the sake stirred.
“So, I’m a Manipulation type?” Aside from the leaf’s chaotic movement, Haoren noticed nothing else.
There was no increase in water volume, no color change, no crystallization—meaning he was neither an Enhancement, Emission, nor Manifestation type.
Just as Haoren pondered this, the leaf that had been wildly moving on the surface suddenly vanished without warning—just folded and disappeared.
“Huh?” Haoren was dumbfounded. What was this phenomenon?
Confused, he plucked another leaf from a potted plant and placed it in the glass, activating his Nen again.
The same thing happened: the leaf first stirred chaotically, then disappeared.
“Hmm?” Haoren was puzzled beyond measure.
The disappearance of the leaf likely related to space—thus, probably a Specialization-type phenomenon.
Feeling pleased with his insight, Haoren’s throat felt dry. Come to think of it, he hadn’t eaten or drunk anything for nearly thirty hours.
He grabbed the glass from the tray and drained it in one gulp.
---
There was no special taste—just ordinary, refreshing water.
Haoren pursed his lips, eyes wide open.
“Oh no! How did I drink the Water-seeing Style sake…? Wait, the taste just now was definitely water!” Haoren picked up the sake bottle and licked the rim.
“That’s right, this is definitely sake. So why did it taste like water before? Could it be…”
Haoren performed the Water-seeing Style a third time. This time, instead of worrying about the runaway leaf, he confirmed the liquid in the glass was sake before activating his Nen.
After the technique, Haoren flicked a bit of the liquid with his pinky finger and tasted it.
“Damn, it really turned into water!” The taste had changed—Transformation type.
If he hadn’t used sake for the Water-seeing Style, he might never have discovered this phenomenon.
Haoren’s Water-seeing Style had simultaneously exhibited Manipulation, Transformation, and Specialization traits.
Perplexed, Haoren scratched his head but quickly set the matter aside and began reviewing the central system information.
“Player Black Flame Dragon used item ‘Bloodline Awakening Pill S-Type’ successfully, awakening bloodline ability ‘Extra Life Mechanism.’”
“Player used ‘Spirit Light Jade’ successfully, Nen ability awakened, inherited skills acquired: ‘Spirit Light Mirror Recoil’ and ‘Bright Purification Curse.’ Gained combat experience and memory. Nen abilities do not appear in the skill list; specific cultivation methods must be explored independently.”
The item ‘Bloodline Awakening Pill S-Type’ has only a one in ten thousand chance of dropping from a golden treasure chest.
Item ‘Bloodline Awakening Pill S-Type’ can unlock human potential and awaken personal bloodline abilities. After use, bloodline abilities will awaken within 1 to 24 hours. S-Type indicates a 90% success rate. Failure results in drug resistance, reducing subsequent success rates by 10% each time. Bloodline abilities are entirely personal and cannot be controlled or enhanced by the central system. They are not included in the system’s personal evaluation.
“Only those utterly obsessed with the second dimension, those whose delusions blur the line between reality and illusion, can possess such bloodline power. But once they break that boundary, they achieve a form of immortality.”
Bloodline: ‘Extra Life Mechanism.’ This bloodline ability, formed through the application of traditional video game mechanics, marks a complete departure from ordinary humanity and an official entry into the ranks of the Undead.
Activates ‘Life Quantification,’ permanently fixing bodily functions; health points equal Constitution times ten. Before HP reaches zero, no damage can cause death or limb loss.
Activates ‘Extra Life Mechanism’: before all extra lives are exhausted, the player has no lifespan limit. Each death consumes one extra life. Upon depletion, the player permanently ceases to exist. Most resurrection items become ineffective. Current extra lives: 2 (initial value 3).
Activates ‘Lesson of Blood’: each time the player dies and resurrects, they gain immunity to the damage type that caused the previous death. If damage of the same type exceeds the previous death’s threshold, damage is forcibly reduced by 50%.
Activates ‘Score Accumulation’: the player can earn points through any actions within dungeons. Upon reaching certain thresholds, rewards increase the number of extra lives. Current points: 700.
