Chapter Thirteen: Fury for a Beloved Face, Part Two
Time passed, and Li Chengzhu found, to his surprise, that he felt not the slightest trace of fatigue. Within his body, immortal spiritual energy diminished and then replenished itself, always maintaining a flawless balance.
Meanwhile, the immortal’s movements grew slower and slower. The white club had drained away too much of his immortal spiritual energy, leaving him increasingly unable to keep up. His entire body was a ruin, scarcely a single unbroken patch left upon him. From afar, he looked like a blood-soaked demon straight out of a hell of slaughter.
After a long and bitter struggle, the immortal finally made one fatal slip, and his immortal sword was swallowed by the staff. Then he took a strike from Little Thing’s glazed needle, followed by two or three sword blows from Yuanmu, and four or five crushing swings from Li Chengzhu’s tiger-head club. In an instant, his mind was thrown into chaos.
Li Chengzhu looked coldly at the immortal, who now could no longer tell east from west in midair. Eight hundred flying swords rang sharply above his head, and with a single hand seal from the great boss Li, they shot forth like a storm of steel, stabbing at the immortal.
A rapid series of piercing sounds rang out. Every part of the immortal’s body except the vital regions was impaled by the flying swords, turning him into a giant, swaying porcupine in the air.
Li Chengzhu formed another seal with a vicious motion, and the eight hundred flying swords carried the immortal hurtling toward the ground.
With a thunderous crash, the earth was smashed into a massive pit.
Through the not-so-dense curtain of rain, Yuanmu saw that the immortal had been nailed into the pit by the eight hundred flying swords. Blood flowed out quickly, mingling with the rainwater until it became a sluggish red stream.
Sighing, Yuanmu shook his head and turned to fly downward.
The immortal seemed finished. With Li Chengzhu holding the field, that fellow probably would not even escape with his immortal soul intact. In other words, there was no more need for Yuanmu here.
What a grueling fight. Yuanmu flew to Yuan Sen’s side, smiled at his brother, and set up a rain barrier above Yuan Sen’s already drenched body.
Li Chengzhu flew to the immortal’s side, bracing the white club in one hand and planting a foot in the immortal’s groin. In a cold voice, he asked, “I’ll ask only once. Who sent you?”
The immortal lifted his eyelids and looked at Li Chengzhu once before bursting into mad laughter. “Ha ha! I never thought that I, an immortal, would be brought low by a mere cultivator like you. Ha ha...”
“Laugh, you damned fool!” With a fierce swing, Li Chengzhu brought the tiger-head club crashing down below the immortal’s waist.
On the far side, Xiaoying, who had been watching Li Chengzhu all this time, quickly shut her eyes and turned her head away. Even from more than a mile away, she still felt the ground beneath her feet shudder violently, and the rainwater on the leaves of several small grasses trembled down in a fine shiver. A few great trees let out mournful creaks once more. Then a tremendous boom reached her ears.
The ground trembled more than a dozen times beneath Li Chengzhu’s blows before finally settling. Looking again at the immortal, one saw that his brains had already burst out, his whole body smashed into the pit’s muddy floor, yet his eyes still glared wide open, fixed straight on the great boss Li.
“Yuanmu!” Li Chengzhu bellowed. “Meteor Sword!”
At the call, Yuanmu hurriedly tossed over the Meteor Sword. Li Chengzhu formed a seal and drew the immortal sword back into his own hand. Coldly regarding the immortal’s eyes, still unclosed in death, he raised the blade and brought it down. A spray of blood followed as he severed the immortal’s head. Then he reached out and snapped his fingers at Little Thing. “Finish him.”
At the command, Little Thing leaped onto the corpse and swiftly drew out the immortal’s soul.
“Aren’t you afraid of divine lightning striking you down?” the immortal’s soul asked coldly the moment it appeared.
Li Chengzhu gave a cold smile, bent down, and lifted the head in his hand, bringing it before the soul. “I admire your courage.”
He patted his own forehead and went on, “But I also hate people like you who are as stubborn as a dead duck scalded in boiling water.”
With a light wave of his hand, he released the two immortal swords that had been swallowed by the tiger-head club. Drained of their immortal spiritual energy, the two swords had long since lost all vitality; their surfaces were dull and lifeless, without the slightest ripple of spiritual power. With a faint clink, they fell to the ground.
Li Chengzhu picked one up, pierced the immortal’s head with it, then planted the sword into the earth, leaving it standing upright. He took up the other and turned toward the corpse of the second immortal.
Halfway there, he suddenly remembered something and looked back with a smile at the immortal’s soul. “Still, I’m truly curious. Just who could make immortals like you so utterly loyal? Hmm, I imagine that person’s cultivation must be very high, right?”
And with that, he paid the soul no further attention and continued on.
Behind him came the sound of Little Thing chewing.
He dealt with the other immortal’s corpse in the same manner, and only then did Li Chengzhu stroll over to Xiaoying. He smiled faintly at her. “I’m back.”
Tears glistened in Xiaoying’s eyes. With one hand supporting Gu Linglong, she said in a trembling voice, “It’s enough that you came back.”
“Zhuzi.” Yuanmu, after enduring a hard-fought battle, now looked somewhat short of breath as he brought his brother over as well.
Li Chengzhu grinned at Yuanmu, reached out to pat his shoulder, and raised his brows. “Good coordination.”
Yuanmu curled his lip. “Only a beast like you would scheme against me. If that one sword hadn’t taken out an immortal, I reckon we’d all just be waiting to die.”
Li Chengzhu laughed and said nothing.
That move had been a gamble of the highest order. If Yuanmu had not understood his intent, it would have been like aborting a pregnancy in the middle of childbirth: success, or die trying. Thinking back on it now, he could still feel how perilous it had been.
Yuanmu stared fixedly at the white club in Li Chengzhu’s hand, swallowed hard, and forced back the words on his tongue.
Li Chengzhu formed a seal and stored the tiger-head club back within his body, then took out the complete set of immortal armor from his ring, along with the hoop used by the first immortal, and tossed them toward Yuanmu.
The mighty Yuanmu leaped up like a gorilla spotting a banana, caught them in his arms, and beamed with delight. “We didn’t see a thing today,” he said.
Li Chengzhu nodded. When dealing with smart people, there was no need to say much. The secret of the God-Slaying Bow was best known by as few people as possible.
After Little Thing finished devouring the immortal’s soul, it leaped back onto Li Chengzhu’s shoulder, chittering nonstop, its fur flashing green and white in turns.
Li Chengzhu frowned slightly, then reached out and tucked Little Thing into the Blood Jade Ring.
“What’s wrong?” Xiaoying asked.
“Nothing. Little Thing says there are two more waiting for us over there.” Li Chengzhu pointed toward the center of the battlefield, where the corpses of two experts at the Great Ascension stage lay alongside the unconscious Qiu Feng.
