Chapter 46: Operation Raging Dragon (11)
Far away at a distance of 1,200 meters, the .50-caliber rifle equipped with a silencer made a very faint sound. The noise of the bullet swiftly piercing the sentry's skull was also minimal, but the thud of the sentry tumbling down in the watchtower inevitably reached the ears of the garrison defenders inside the fortification amid the silent darkness.
Two sentries, one on the left and one on the right, peered suspiciously outward through the observation ports of the machine gun nest, only to witness an unbelievable sight. On the floating bridge, a dark figure was sprinting at lightning speed, about to reach the bridgehead and storm the dam. At the watchtower, the sentry's body lay limp and draped over the parapet, with half of his skull hanging outside the wall in a horrifying shape.
Terrified beyond measure, the two sentries were just about to cry out and open fire, but it was already too late! Song Jinggang and Luo Haoran, who had long been lurking underwater, thrust their left arms forcefully against the underwater stone wall. With two loud splashes, they burst out of the surface, leaping more than a meter high into the air. While still airborne, the Type 98 rifles in their hands opened fire.
"Thud."
"Thud."
Two muffled sounds rang out almost simultaneously. The bullets fired from the silenced Type 98 rifles passed with pinpoint accuracy through the observation ports, piercing directly into the eyes of the two sentries.
"Crack!" "Crack!" The right eyeballs of both sentries burst open simultaneously, and two streams of dark blood spurted like arrows from their eyes. Their bodies jerked upward uncontrollably, and with two brief cries of agony, they collapsed heavily to the ground.
Having accomplished their mission with those two shots, Song Jinggang and Luo Haoran were just beginning to descend. Brushing their left arms against the outer edge of the fortification and vaulting over, they landed effortlessly inside. Immediately, they swung the heavy machine guns around—one pitch-black muzzle aimed at the barracks, while the other guarded the flank to secure against any sudden developments.
Almost at the same time, Wu Yun, who had been sprinting at full speed without a moment's pause, finally trampled across the undulating synthetic resin, rushed onto the bridgehead, and charged straight for the watchtower!
"Rat-a-tat-tat-tat-tat!" Suddenly, a burst of rapid gunfire erupted from a room in a corner of the military camp. Wu Yun, running at high speed, dropped to the ground in a tiger-leap. The bullets grazed his body and struck the concrete road surface, kicking up a flurry of gray dust.
The defenders inside the military camp reacted with astonishing speed!
"Unable to get a lock!" Lang Tianyu's voice carried a hint of anxiety.
Wu Yun let out a fierce curse: "Damn it! Suppressing fire with the machine gun!" Before his voice even faded, the heavy machine gun in Song Jinggang's hands began to roar. A dense sheet of bullets swept toward the direction of the military camp like a downpour. The low and thunderous roar instantly merged into one continuous sound, and the gunfire inside the camp paused abruptly.
Taking advantage of this opportunity, Wu Yun leaped to his feet, dashed toward the base of the watchtower in a crouch, and scrambled up the tower structure with hand-over-hand speed. In less than a second, he vaulted into the watchtower, kicked the completely dead sentry outward with one foot, and fired a short controlled burst from his Type 32 toward the barracks. Two bare-skinned fat targets running toward the mortar position dropped to the ground in response.
Yet in that brief window, a dark figure holding a .50-caliber sniper rifle rushed swiftly out of a doorway. With a few fluid movements, the figure reached a cluster of rocks dozens of meters away and rapidly dropped prone—those first two guys had actually been a decoy!
However, no sooner had the Defense Force sniper gone prone and tried to assess the situation than Lang Tianyu on the mountaintop had firmly locked onto him. With a gentle squeeze of his trigger, a 12.7mm heavy round burrowed directly into the sniper's temple, blowing half of his skull apart with a thunderous blast.
With the high-ground suppression from Lang Tianyu on the peak and Wu Yun in the watchtower, Song Jinggang and Luo Haoran vaulted out of the fortification. Holding their Type 32 assault rifles equipped with grenade launchers levelly, they advanced rapidly along the dam toward the barracks, covering each other alternately.
The heavy machine guns ceased their roar, and the squad's firepower instantly thinned out. However, with an enemy sniper of unknown location lurking about, the defenders inside the camp were pinned down by immense pressure and dared not act rashly. Seizing this interval, Song Jinggang and Luo Haoran's advance met with virtually no resistance, and they quickly closed in within a 200-meter radius of the barracks.
At that moment, the defenders within the camp finally made their move, shrieking wildly as they rushed out from both the front and rear gates. They scattered rapidly in all directions, firing their various firearms wildly and haphazardly into the surroundings. But Wu Yun saw it clearly: the movements of these soldiers seemed chaotic, but in truth, it was merely a feint. Their ultimate objective was the Hammer-2 military off-road vehicle parked not far away.
"They really are trying to pull a Kamikaze assault..." Wu Yun sneered, pulling the trigger without hesitation.
"Tat-tat-tat," "Tat-tat-tat."
"Thud," "Thud," "Thud."
Wu Yun and Lang Tianyu maintained a continuous stream of fire, dropping bodies one after another inside the camp. Finally, two men managed to squeeze into the Hammer off-road vehicle. Moments later, the engine roared to life, crashing fiercely toward the camp gate. The sandbag fortifications and roadblock barriers at the gate were sent flying high into the air.
The violent impact caused the off-road vehicle to leap more than a meter high before landing with a heavy crash. It then stepped on the accelerator, tearing frantically out of the camp area. The roof-mounted 12.7mm heavy machine gun roared to life, filling the road ahead with smoke and dust as concrete fragments of all sizes were sent flying everywhere. Song Jinggang and Luo Haoran, who were charging toward the camp gate, were forced to dive to the ground, rolling continuously to evade the high-velocity hail of bullets.
"Boom!" A smoke grenade was tossed from the off-road vehicle, and a cloud of white smoke instantly billowed upward, obscuring the squad's line of sight. The off-road vehicle roared forward at top speed, while the machine gun on top continued its frantic, uninterrupted sweep.
Wu Yun emptied an entire magazine continuously toward the jeep, but the off-road vehicle possessed exceptionally strong armor, rendering the shots virtually ineffective.
"Grenades!" At Wu Yun's loud shout, Song Jinggang and Luo Haoran flung their hands while rolling on the ground, consecutively hurling four grenades.
"Boom, boom, boom, boom!" Four explosions detonated almost simultaneously right at the front of the off-road vehicle. Thousands of steel pellets struck the body of the car with a dense, chaotic clatter. The driver instinctively jerked the steering wheel, causing the front of the vehicle to swerve and abruptly decelerate. At that exact moment, Lang Tianyu on the mountaintop fired.
"Thud!" A bullet pierced the bulletproof windshield at the front of the vehicle and burrowed into the driver's skull. The driver's body stiffened abruptly and slumped over the steering wheel. The out-of-control vehicle instantly staggered and spun around horizontally.
"Thud!" A second bullet punched through the side window of the car, tearing the machine gunner's neck to shreds. The machine gun was silenced instantly.
Immediately after, the off-road vehicle's tires let out a piercing screech as it skidded toward the edge of the dam. With a loud crash, it smashed into the guardrail, flew into the air, and tumbled down the dam, crashing repeatedly against the mountain body amidst a series of massive roars. Within mere seconds, the military off-road vehicle—touted as having the best performance in the world—plunged to the bottom of the valley, smashing into absolute ruins. The leaking fuel was ignited by sparks generated when the vehicle slammed against the rocks, triggering a roaring explosion. Following that, the ammunition inside the vehicle cooked off, creating a massive fireball and billows of smoke accompanied by thunderous explosions that echoed through the valley for a long time.
"Bang!" Wu Yun fired coldly, striking down the last bare-skinned fat target running wildly within the camp grounds. The gunfire across the entire military camp finally died down completely.
"Old Song, Old Luo, hurry, hurry, hurry! Time to drill holes and set off charges!" Looking at the littered, chaotic barracks and sensing the silent mountain wilderness within a radius of several kilometers, Wu Yun shouted triumphantly.
"Pfft!" Their response was three middle fingers raised in unison.
