Chapter 133: Xiao Jin Loses His Memory
This story is purely fictional.
Walking toward Xiao Yi's hospital room, Ma Shengwei's mind was occupied by the situation surrounding Xiao Jin's surgery. To be completely honest, Ma Shengwei did not hope in the least that Xiao Jin would pull through this ordeal; he wished Xiao Jin would drop dead immediately. The mere memory of Xiao Jin holding a gun to his head made anger surge straight to the top of Ma Shengwei's head.
Ma Shengwei and Gao Yating arrived first at Xiao Yi's room in Dahe Hospital. On their way there, Gao Yating had not yet carefully observed what this girl Xiao Yi actually looked like, or how she had managed to hook Yun Jiu, the man she fancied.
Xiao Yi's hospital room was empty. A nurse informed Ma Shengwei that Xiao Yi was waiting outside the operating theater for her father's surgery to conclude.
The two of them arrived outside the neurosurgery operating room and saw Xiao Yi waiting anxiously.
Xiao Yi sat there in a daze. Seeing Ma Shengwei and Gao Yating approach, she could not even be bothered to acknowledge them.
After what felt like an eternity, the surgery ended. The doctor walked out and told Xiao Yi, "Your father's surgery was very successful. Family members need to strengthen postoperative care for the patient. If you have any further questions, you can consult me."
"Thank you, doctor. Thank you, doctor," Xiao Yi said, bowing repeatedly.
Ma Shengwei took in Xiao Yi's actions, completely at a loss for words. Xiao Yi had never accepted him as her father. Ma Shengwei stood blankly in the hallway, while Gao Yating kept her eyes fixed entirely on the young woman before them.
Gao Yating observed Xiao Yi very closely, thinking to herself, "This girl is indeed quite pretty, without a trace of Ma Shengwei's rough-hewn appearance. She looks like a lotus emerging from the water. Although she has not fully recovered her health, her yellowish complexion cannot conceal her striking features at all. No wonder Yun Jiu was captivated by her."
"Where is your mother?" Gao Yating asked.
"What are you here for? Who the hell knows where that slut has wandered off to?" Xiao Yi retorted sharply.
Hearing this, Gao Yating covered her mouth with her hand and chuckled softly.
"What are you laughing at?" Xiao Yi demanded.
"I'm laughing at what you just said—how you don't know where that so-and-so went," Gao Yating replied.
Feeling somewhat awkward, Ma Shengwei quickly intervened, "You shouldn't speak about your mother that way. There are some things that children like you cannot possibly understand."
"Let's go, let's go back to the room and check on your father," Gao Yating said, defusing the tension.
The three of them entered the hospital room, where Xiao Yi saw a nurse tidying up the drainage tube by the side of Xiao Jin's bed.
On the bedside monitor, all of Xiao Jin's vital signs registered as normal.
Xiao Yi sat down beside the bed and took Xiao Jin's withered hand, unable to suppress a wave of sorrow. Her eyes grew moist as she looked at Xiao Jin lying on the bed with his eyes closed.
After checking on Xiao Jin, Gao Yating and Ma Shengwei left the hospital.
"You didn't really come to the hospital just to see Xiao Jin, did you? I also heard about Xiao Jin rescuing Wu Zhengzhe. The pressing matter right now is to eliminate all the thorns in our eyes. Otherwise, you will live to regret it," Gao Yating said.
Ma Shengwei sneered, "Rest assured, Xiao Jin is unlikely to ever wake up. Even if he does wake up, he will probably never remember anything again; he will be an amnesiac. You didn't notice, did you? The nurse we saw when we first entered the room had already completed an injection of a specialized anesthetic."
"You really are vicious," Gao Yating laughed heartily. "By reducing Xiao Jin to a vegetative state, you can rightfully and propertly philander with his wife. Even in the worst-case scenario, he becomes an amnesiac who no longer remembers your affair with his wife, and can no longer expose your crimes to the public. You've killed two birds with one stone. Brilliant, truly brilliant! I, Gao Yating, am utterly in awe of you."
"Those who submit to me will prosper, and those who resist me shall perish. In my position, without ruthless methods, how could I possibly survive in such a treacherous environment? I have to thank my younger self for being soft-hearted and sparing someone who should never have been spared. He was the one who directly led to my imprisonment; he engineered a setup making me fall in love with his cousin, leading to our physical involvement. Later on, they accused me of disrupting public order and engaging in illicit sexual relations under the guise of romance, landing me in prison for two years," Ma Shengwei recounted, touching upon the events of his youth.
"I've always been curious: how can an ex-con climb to the position you hold today? I only know that your relationship with Jin Yan is extraordinary, and that girl is the child of you and Jin Yan. But I still don't understand how a common criminal managed to claw his way up to his current rank," Gao Yating asked, tinged with doubt.
"Are you really that curious about how I rose to my current position?" Ma Shengwei countered.
"Of course I am. Although we are business partners, when it comes to personal understanding, I know almost nothing about you. You know my situation as well—that girl of yours hooked the man I fancied and even got pregnant. Although she miscarried, that relationship happened anyway. But for the sake of our careers, I choose to overlook these petty romantic trifles; I don't want to waste too much effort on matters of the heart. On the career front, however, I want to achieve great things. In that case, Director Ma, you are vital to my ambitions. Therefore, it is necessary for us to stand on the same line—or to put it more accurately, to be in the same boat—and carve out our own empire. What does Director Ma think?" Gao Yating glanced at Ma Shengwei.
"I was a policeman from a very young age, serving as the chief of a police substation in my hometown. During a 'strike hard' crime wave campaign, because of the incident I just mentioned, I served two years in prison. After completing my sentence, I had no desire to return to my hometown because I had lost too much face to go back. So I wandered around until I reached a mountainous region, taking shelter in the home of a local villager. As it happened, a mudslide struck, and the villager's son perished in the disaster. Shortly after, a mailman came by to deliver mail while the villager was out. I saw an admission letter from the Beijing Public Security University and realized my chance had arrived. That September, I went to Beijing and assumed the identity of a student named Ma Shengwei to attend police academy," Ma Shengwei said with a mysterious air. "This is something no one else knows, not even my younger brother."
"I know, confidentiality is paramount, mum's the word," Gao Yating replied.
"Just think, I was already a police officer originally, so I had a solid foundation in hand-to-hand combat and martial arts. Once I arrived at the academy, my academic and training scores were consistently at the top of the class. No matter the competition, first place became my exclusive honor; everyone else was left so far behind they could only bow down and yield to me in submission," Ma Shengwei reminisced with lingering pride.
"With that bulky frame of yours, all thick-set and full of flesh, how could you ever look like a champion of anything?" Gao Yating found it hard to believe.
"I was actually quite handsome when I was young, alright? It's just that I haven't kept up with working out and exercising, which is how I ended up like this now. However—" Ma Shengwei trailed off, hesitating.
"However what?" Gao Yating asked.
Ma Shengwei beckoned with his hand, signaling Gao Yating to step closer to him.
Gao Yating took two steps forward and leaned her head slightly toward Ma Shengwei.
With a salacious expression, Ma Shengwei whispered, "However, my physical stamina is exceptionally robust. Especially that particular ability to showcase a man's prowess—it's utterly extraordinary, because I have three kidneys."
"Mountain god?" Gao Yating misheard.
"Not mountain god, three kidneys. Normal people have two kidneys, but I have three. Understand?" Ma Shengwei asked.
"Well, you truly are one of a kind. No wonder you are constantly surrounded by women," Gao Yating said, a sudden realization dawning on her.
"If you have any needs, my services are always available," Ma Shengwei tempted further.
"Spare me. I have no appetite for a fat-headed man like you. Unlike you, I don't even glance at average men. We only came together because we are business partners. But when it comes to romantic relations, you simply aren't my type, understand?" Gao Yating rebuffed him. "Go on with your personal history; I'm still somewhat interested."
"I excelled at everything and graduated as an outstanding cadet. Upon graduation, I was assigned as a police officer in a township neighboring Ma Shengwei's hometown. From there, it was smooth sailing all the way up until I became the deputy director of the provincial municipal public security bureau, before being transferred here to Dahe. Now you know, right?" Ma Shengwei said.
"Well, now I know. You still have to climb higher and strive for a high-ranking position in the provincial department. I wish you a smooth official career and rapid advancement," Gao Yating laughed.
"By the way, today is the court hearing for Chi Zhaoming. Shall we go check it out together?"
"I won't go. Going or not going makes no difference. Do you think there will be any problems?" Ma Shengwei asked.
"I think you'd better go take a look. Didn't that police officer named Wu Zhengzhe say he wanted you to listen to the death knell tolling for you by the law?" Gao Yating asked curiously.
"That's sheer wishful thinking. Saying he wants to toll a death knell for me—he grossly overestimates his own weight. He has no idea how high the sky is or how thick the earth is. I gave him a platform and let him investigate a few major, high-profile cases, and he's completely lost touch with who he is. I've already received his resignation letter; he's effectively waving a white flag and surrendering. He wants to ring a bell? Fat chance, he no longer has that opportunity," Ma Shengwei sneered unfeelingly.
"Your methods are truly formidable, and your depth of scheming is beyond anything I anticipated. Being in the same boat with you, if anything ever happens one day, I'll have to keep my wits about me. If I were to turn against you, I truly wouldn't be your match. It's terrifying to think about, Director Ma!" Gao Yating felt a lingering sense of dread.
"Don't be nervous. I never make a move against women. When I do make a move, it's strictly limited to matters in the bedroom. As for everything else, I'm not that ruthless. Rest assured, President Gao!" Ma Shengwei laughed lewdly.
"Who would have thought Director Ma could be so tender and protective of the fairer sex? It's just a pity that you, Director Ma, will never be my cup of tea. Just like my subordinate, who has always coveted my beauty. Yet, for nearly ten years, I have never felt a shred of romantic or sexual desire for Leng Junfeng; sometimes I don't even look at him as a man. As the saying goes, sex requires emotion—sex without emotion has never and will never happen with me," Gao Yating remarked, sharing her perspective on intimacy.
