Chapter 131: Xiao Jin's Brain Injury
This story is purely fictional.
"You’ve certainly grown bold, haven't you? You wanted me to let Wu Zhengzhe go, and since I keep my word, I did. But you? You handed that thing to Wu Zhengzhe right under my nose. I am truly speechless. I might as well tell you the truth: that item is of no real use to Wu Zhengzhe; in his hands, it’s nothing more than a piece of junk. Out of consideration for the fact that you raised Xiao Yi, I’ll let you off the hook. I can give you a fortune—there is one hundred million on this card. That foolish Wu Zhengzhe didn't accept it earlier, but now it’s yours. Take this money, fly far away, and travel the world. You’ll have more wealth than you could spend in several lifetimes." Ma Shengwei was attempting to entice Xiao Jin.
"Let me tell you, I don't want your filthy money," Xiao Jin replied with firm resolve.
"If you don't want money, then what do you want? You don't want women either. Oh, that’s right—it’s not that you don't want them, it’s that it would be useless if you did. Ah, what to do? Giving a woman to you would be a waste of resources—it would be a crime," Ma Shengwei sneered, mocking Xiao Jin’s impotence.
Already harboring murderous intent, Xiao Jin was pushed over the edge by Ma Shengwei’s taunts. He instinctively drew his sidearm from his holster and pointed it at Ma Shengwei’s head. "I don't want anything. All I want today is your life!"
Lying in his hospital room, Xiao Yi could not set his mind at ease regarding Xiao Jin and Ma Shengwei. Fearing a physical confrontation, he dragged his weary body out of the room. When he saw his father holding a gun to Ma Shengwei’s head, Xiao Yi panicked. Disregarding his lack of strength, he rushed between the two, instinctively standing in front of Ma Shengwei to block Xiao Jin and prevent the situation from escalating.
Xiao Jin stood on the higher part of the stairs, while Ma Shengwei stood lower. In his nervous state, Xiao Yi bumped into Xiao Jin’s hand, and a gunshot rang out, shattering the silence of the hospital. Xiao Jin, caught off guard, slipped and tumbled down the stairs, his head striking the sharp edge of a concrete step. Blood began to flow instantly.
Ma Shengwei was completely stunned. "Save my father! What are you just standing there for?" Xiao Yi shouted.
Ma Shengwei felt a secret sense of joy. *It would be better if he died. Why should I bother saving such a useless man?* But seeing Xiao Yi screaming for help, he had no choice but to heave Xiao Jin onto his back and run toward the emergency room.
Wu Zhengzhe had been searching everywhere for Chi Zhaoming without success. Remembering that Mingyue usually did housekeeping at this time, he called her. Just as Gao Yating and Mingyue were chatting happily, the phone rang at Gao Yating’s villa.
Gao Yating answered. A frantic male voice came through: "Hello, is Chi Mingyue there?"
"May I ask who is calling? How did you get this number?" Gao Yating asked, feeling puzzled.
"I’m Xiao Jin from the Dahe Police Station. You know him, right? He introduced my younger sister to work at your home and left your number with me—for safety's sake, you know?" Zhengzhe replied.
"Oh, I see. We were just talking about you! Mingyue is busy working. Is there something important?" Gao Yating asked.
"Yes, it’s very urgent. Could you let me speak with her?" Wu Zhengzhe asked. Gao Yating handed the phone to Mingyue.
"Mingyue, come back immediately! Something has happened to your brother—something terrible! I can't find him anywhere, and his wife’s phone isn't going through, so I thought of calling you," Zhengzhe said urgently.
"Something terrible? What happened? Tell me, you’re scaring me!" Mingyue panicked.
"It’s not something I can explain in a few words. Just come back as fast as you can. I’m heading to your rental place now. I don't even know if Situ Kongming is back from the factory yet," Zhengzhe said.
"Okay, okay, I’m heading there now. Wait for me at the rental," Mingyue said, hurriedly saying goodbye to Gao Yating.
At the Zhizhen Bar, Leng Junfeng had just finished watching a soccer match. His team had won a thrilling victory, and a satisfied smile hung on his face. Feeling triumphant, he walked through the bar, greeting familiar faces who called out to him, as if he were in a particularly good mood. Feeling bored, he thought of Officer Xiao.
Whistling, he pulled out his latest Motorola mobile phone to make a call. The ringtone sounded repeatedly, but no one answered. He tried a second time, and finally, someone picked up. "Hello, this is the neurosurgery department of Dahe Hospital. The owner of the phone you are calling is currently in the operating room undergoing emergency surgery for a head injury," the nurse said before hanging up. Upon hearing that Officer Xiao was in emergency surgery, he rushed to the hospital.
Seeing Chi Mingyue leave the villa in such a rush, Gao Yating shook her head. Suddenly, her eyelid began to twitch uncontrollably. Sensing that something was wrong, she called Leng Junfeng. "Where are you? My eyelid has been twitching. I have a bad premonition. How are things at the hotel? And what about the sauna and the baccarat parlor?"
"With me around, are you still worried? I just left the bar; it’s deserted today. The entertainment hall is empty, too. I don't know what’s going on—the usual players seem to have evaporated overnight. But that’s fine, it’s peaceful. I haven't enjoyed myself like this in a long time; I was winning hundreds of thousands all by myself. But, something has indeed happened," Leng Junfeng said rapidly.
"What happened?" Gao Yating asked.
"Officer Xiao from the Dahe Police Station is in emergency surgery. I’m on my way to the hospital," Leng Junfeng said, sounding intoxicated.
"Emergency surgery? What happened? Was he on duty or was it an accident?" Gao Yating pressed.
"I learned from another officer that there was some trouble between the Chief of the Dahe Police Station and Xiao Jin. The news has been blocked. If you don't have anything else to do, come to the hospital. My dear beautiful boss, I miss you," Leng Junfeng said with a smirk.
"You’re at it again. I told you last time, take your affection to some other beauty. You should give up on me," Gao Yating said.
"Me? I’m the type who won’t give up until I reach the Yellow River, and I won’t turn back until I hit the southern wall. The only way I’d stop wanting you is if I ended up hanging on a wall," Leng Junfeng laughed.
"Who would dare hang my 'Boss Leng' on a wall? I’d definitely get revenge for you," Gao Yating said, pretending not to understand the idiom.
"Boss Gao, you’re joking. No one in Dahe dares to hang me on a wall. When I say 'hanging on a wall,' I mean being dead. You know, like a funeral portrait," Leng Junfeng explained.
"I know. Do you really take me for an idiot? I just don't want that to happen. At least not in the next few years. Don't you think?" Gao Yating said.
"It’s hard to say in our line of work. Just look at what happened earlier: Ma Shengwei had a gun pointed at his head by Xiao Jin. Rumor has it that Ma Shengwei messed with Xiao Jin’s wife nearly twenty years ago. It turns out that the girl, Xiao Yi, isn't Xiao Jin’s daughter, but Ma Shengwei’s. Isn't that hilarious?" Leng Junfeng rattled on.
"Is that so funny? You look like a fool," Gao Yating remarked.
"Oh, did I upset you? I suppose it is upsetting that the man you have a crush on had a child with a girl twenty years his junior. If you were with me, I’d treat you like a Bodhisattva, holding you in the palm of my hand like a treasure," Leng Junfeng said with a mocking tone.
"I’m calling Chief Ma to see how our 'umbrella' is doing. After such a scare, he deserves some comfort. Goodbye." Gao Yating hung up the phone in a huff and dialed Ma Shengwei.
Ma Shengwei had been broken out in a cold sweat by Xiao Jin. In that instant, he thought he was finished—that the consequences of his own evil deeds were finally catching up to him. He regretted taking another man’s wife as his own. He had plenty of women; why had he chosen to go after the wife of one of his subordinates? He had nearly paid with his life. "Scared the hell out of me! Scared the hell out of me!" Ma Shengwei muttered, patting his chest.
However, his momentary regret vanished as quickly as the gunshot had echoed. It disappeared completely. His nerves still frayed, his phone rang. Gao Yating’s voice came through. "Is this Chief Ma? This is Gao Yating from Dahe Entertainment. I heard you had quite a scare, so I’m calling to help you calm your nerves."
"Calm my nerves? I don't need your help, Boss Gao. I heard that your man got my girl pregnant? How exactly are you disciplining your man? I’d really like to know," Ma Shengwei said, sounding agitated.
"That doesn't sound very pleasant coming from you, Chief Ma. What do you mean 'my man'? Did we get a marriage certificate or something? We are merely living together. I’m unmarried, he’s single, it’s not against the law. I haven't even mentioned how your girl was flirting with my man, and yet you’re blaming me? If you want to blame someone, blame your brother, Lu Jiahui, for his meddling. I know the whole story, and it’s not the way you say it is. Besides, Officer Xiao Jin, who is currently in surgery, is your subordinate. He was doing exactly what you told him to do, yet you—you’ve been occupying his wife for twenty years! Twenty years—even an iron rod can be ground down to a needle," Gao Yating snapped.
"What rods and needles? What occupying? How can a woman like you speak so vulgarly? Can’t you be more civilized?" Ma Shengwei replied, feeling that Gao Yating’s words were becoming unbearable.
