Chapter 83: The Wild Wolf's Gift
Zhang Shan advanced while clearing monsters, and the East Sea Dragon King and his followers struggled behind him, pressing forward with equal difficulty.
"Boss, should we keep chasing? There are too many monsters—lots of people have already been sent back to the city, and it's getting harder for us," someone said.
"Chase! Why not? Six-Bar Bodhisattva is forging ahead through the horde alone. We're a whole group, what do we have to fear?" the East Sea Dragon King replied through gritted teeth. Truthfully, he didn’t want to chase anymore; it would be so much easier to find a safe spot and simply teleport back to the city.
But he couldn't afford to lose face. He would rather be cut down by Zhang Shan than slink back to the city in disgrace. He had just founded his guild and was full of confidence, even going so far as to challenge the Storm and Cloud Guild. If he lacked the courage to confront Zhang Shan alone, what hope did he have for tomorrow’s guild war? Even with trump cards in hand, the spirit of his men would be broken, and how could they fight a guild war then?
So they must pursue, even if everyone had to lose a level. Levels could be regained, but once their fighting spirit was gone, all would be lost.
Zhang Shan was unaware that many members of the Conquering Seas Guild were already wavering. He simply pressed forward, quietly awaiting his skills to cool down.
A system prompt appeared: "Your Talent Passive King has been triggered by killing a demonized wild wolf. You have automatically acquired the Wild Wolf Talent (Passive) skill."
What was this? A wild wolf passive had dropped? Could it be that having a red name made talent triggers easier? That didn’t seem logical. The last time he gained a magic resistance passive, he was also red-named. Now it happened again, giving Zhang Shan the dangerous idea of testing this theory further.
But the thought was risky—what if, every time he wanted to trigger a passive skill, he first had to kill a bunch of players and become a notorious red name? No, it was too dangerous, and it went against his original intent. He simply wanted to be a peaceful grinder, not a player killer.
It had to be coincidence. Passive triggers had nothing to do with red names. That must be it.
He decided to check out the Wild Wolf Talent to see if it was the same as the Storm and Cloud Cannon’s little wild wolf skill.
Wild Wolf Talent (Passive): Level 1 (Talent acquired, cannot be upgraded). Increases critical hit rate by three percent.
The skill effect was identical to the little wild wolf, but the name was different, so it should stack. Even though critical damage only increased by one hundred percent, it was already impressive. If he could obtain a few more of these passive skills, every shot would be a critical hit—just imagining it felt exhilarating.
Just then, both his Berserk and Frenzy skills had cooled down, and now, with a freshly acquired passive, it was time to test the critical effect on the Conquering Seas members.
Zhang Shan slowed his monster clearing, feigning exhaustion to give the East Sea Dragon King and his group some hope. Otherwise, they wouldn’t take the bait, and he couldn’t possibly push through a field of wild wolves to hunt them down. He needed to get out of the densely packed monster area first; there were simply too many wild wolves here for him to chase effectively. Let them come to him.
As Zhang Shan slowed, wild wolves quickly gathered around him.
The East Sea Dragon King immediately noticed. "Let’s hurry up! Six-Bar Bodhisattva is losing steam. I said it—there’s no way one person could clear monsters faster than us."
"Could it be a trap, boss?"
"Yeah, his clearing speed is even slower than before. Something’s not right."
"Doesn’t matter. We just need to get close. We still have dozens of people—everyone takes a shot, and he’ll drop."
Now, Zhang Shan looked to be in dire straits. The Panda cub guarded him, standing firm against several wild wolves, while Zhang Shan slowly picked them off one by one. Fresh wild wolves spawned constantly, filling every gap and encircling him.
It seemed he could barely hold on.
"Haha, Six-Bar Bodhisattva, your time has come. Even if we don’t attack you, the little monsters will send you back to the city."
"Stop wasting words, everyone charge! Warriors, use your charge when you get a chance. Cut down this bastard. Let him know what happens when he kills our boss!"
Members of the Conquering Seas Guild edged into Zhang Shan’s attack range, but wild wolves still surrounded him. The warriors couldn’t use their charge skill against him without accidentally charging the wolves.
Seeing they were within range, Zhang Shan wasted no time. He directed his Panda cub to hold off all nearby wolves, then swung his gun toward the approaching guild members.
Their gear was decent—much better than the Storm and Cloud Guild’s. The squishy classes required two shots each from Zhang Shan, or just one if it crit. The strength-based classes were much tougher, most having close to twenty thousand health, and the guardian warriors had absurdly high health.
He ignored the strength classes for now, focusing on eliminating the squishy classes within his range.
"Damn it, Six-Bar Bodhisattva’s attack is too high, and his range is farther than ours. We can’t get close!"
"Warriors, line up side by side and block Six-Bar Bodhisattva’s line of sight. Don’t let him target our squishy classes!"
A dozen warriors moved forward in formation, but with so many wild wolves around, there were shooting gaps everywhere. They couldn’t protect their rear ranks.
"Warriors, charge at the wild wolves beside Six-Bar Bodhisattva. Get close and attack!"
The East Sea Dragon King led the charge, targeting a wild wolf next to Zhang Shan, then swung his axe at Zhang Shan—he even had spare weapons in his pack. The other warriors followed suit, charging the wolves and then closing in with their blades.
This was getting dangerous.
First, Zhang Shan needed to take down the East Sea Dragon King.
Just as the East Sea Dragon King’s axe was about to land, Zhang Shan commanded the Panda cub to unleash its combo skill—seven consecutive strikes.
The East Sea Dragon King, the Conquering Seas Guild’s leader, collapsed once again.
"Damn it, Six-Bar Bodhisattva, you’re asking for death! You dare kill our boss—finish him off!"
The wild wolves that had been surrounding Zhang Shan turned their attention to the warriors after their charge, saving him a lot of trouble.
With so many warriors up close, Zhang Shan had no choice but to take them out first—otherwise, a dozen men swinging twice each would surely finish him off. He had no support to heal him, and couldn’t withstand the assault.
But it didn’t matter; as long as his damage output was high enough and he killed fast enough, fewer enemies would be able to hit him.
The level three Frenzy skill activated, boosting his attack speed by thirty percent, and the legendary hand cannon fired bullets even faster. No matter how tough the warriors were, they were no match for his berserk damage output.
At the same time, Zhang Shan was being slashed repeatedly, his health dropping rapidly.
