Chapter 81: The Dragon King Falls
The members of the Dominion of the Four Seas guild were stunned when they entered Wolf Slope and saw Zhang Shan turn and run.
"Damn, Six-Barreled Bodhisattva is trying to escape! After him!"
"Archers, fire Meteor Arrows! All of you, at once—block his escape routes so he has nowhere to run. We have to stun him!"
Their plan was sound, but doomed from the start.
Zhang Shan had already drawn a host of wild wolves behind him. The Meteor Arrows would have to pierce through this pack to reach him, which was nearly impossible. Every arrow struck the wolves, leaving Zhang Shan unharmed as he darted left and right, luring more wolves behind him.
The Dominion of the Four Seas guild members pursued him desperately, but the wolves kept multiplying. They had no way around them. Some were forced to stay back, holding off the wolves or luring them away—if all else failed, they’d simply clear them out. After all, they had two or three hundred members entering Wolf Slope, more than enough to spare.
The rest continued their pursuit of Zhang Shan.
The East Sea Dragon King, wielding a massive axe, led the charge at the very front. His boots must have been red, for he ran almost as fast as Zhang Shan. If not for the initial gap, he would have already used his Charge skill to slow Zhang Shan and bring him down.
At this moment, the East Sea Dragon King was exceedingly anxious. To make Zhang Shan infamous and unable to participate in the guild war tomorrow night, he had sacrificed thirty-five members of the Dominion guild. If Zhang Shan escaped now, it would be a disgrace too great to bear.
A contingent of five or six hundred had marched to Anyang City, all for the sake of dealing with one man—Zhang Shan. What seemed a sure victory was now in jeopardy; the cooked duck was flying away.
Cursing as he ran, the East Sea Dragon King thought: This Six-Barreled Bodhisattva is so cowardly! When the squishy ones came at him one by one, he slaughtered them gleefully. But when they all entered at once, he turned and fled, giving them no chance at all.
He had to find a way to slow Zhang Shan, or stun him outright. If this dragged on too long, the wild wolves would become overwhelming, and even two or three hundred might not be enough to withstand them.
The East Sea Dragon King stuck close behind Zhang Shan, calculating how to close the distance. If he could get just a little closer, he could use Charge to slow Zhang Shan for three seconds.
Even if he couldn’t kill him alone, three seconds would be enough for the others to catch up. Once they surrounded him, no matter how fierce Zhang Shan was, the East Sea Dragon King was confident he could bring him down. With so many, each tossing a stun, even the best player would be stunned to death.
The key now was how to Charge at Six-Barreled Bodhisattva.
The East Sea Dragon King chased while carefully studying Zhang Shan’s path. He soon found his opportunity: Zhang Shan had to keep luring more wolves, so he couldn’t run straight. Wherever the monsters were thickest, that’s where Zhang Shan ran. If the East Sea Dragon King could predict his next route, he could cut him off in a straight line.
When Zhang Shan prepared once more to lure a pack of wolves, the East Sea Dragon King anticipated his move, didn’t follow directly behind, and instead took a straight path. He swiftly closed the gap, and as Zhang Shan entered his Charge range, the East Sea Dragon King acted without hesitation—he charged, closing the distance in an instant, and swung his axe, dealing over five thousand damage and slowing Zhang Shan for three seconds.
Zhang Shan, struck by Charge, remained calm. This was exactly as he had planned. He lured monsters left and right, deliberately baiting the East Sea Dragon King. Without tasting defeat, how would he know the world’s dangers? Consider this a lesson for the lad.
After being charged and struck once, Zhang Shan immediately activated his Berserk and Frenzy skills. His damage output exploded, his attack speed soared to terrifying heights. The divine hand cannon in his grasp became an automatic mini-cannon, bullets raining down and dealing massive damage to the East Sea Dragon King.
In less than three seconds, four shots and a critical hit brought him down, and a red axe dropped to the ground.
The East Sea Dragon King was dumbfounded. His health was over twenty-five thousand, yet he couldn’t withstand Zhang Shan for even three seconds. He didn’t even get the chance to swing a second time before collapsing—and worse, his axe dropped as well.
It was maddening.
Zhang Shan picked up the axe, and with Berserk still active—immune to control skills—he quickly made his escape.
Other Dominion of the Four Seas members were closing in, archers firing Meteor Arrows once again. Yet it was futile; in his berserk state, Zhang Shan was immune to all control effects.
His pursuers were furious. Zhang Shan had knocked down their leader and pocketed the loot. It was a brazen humiliation, showing utter disregard for their guild.
"After him! We won’t rest until Six-Barreled Bodhisattva is brought down today!"
"Dammit, he dares strike our leader? From now on, we’ll hunt him every day, kill him back to level zero!"
Zhang Shan ignored their impotent rage, fleeing while opening his backpack to admire his spoils. A level twenty red axe—likely worth a million gold. Axes were always the most coveted weapons. The East Sea Dragon King was truly generous, coming all this way just to deliver equipment—a veritable fortune-bringer, he chuckled.
Seeing the furious mob behind him, with the East Sea Dragon King revived by a support and rejoining the chase, Zhang Shan knew the Dragon King, despite his speed, now lagged at the back of the group. Unless someone managed to stun Zhang Shan, he’d have no chance of catching up.
Zhang Shan, of course, gave them no such opportunity. He stopped zigzagging to lure monsters and ran straight ahead. Perhaps some in the Dominion guild could match his speed, but none surpassed it. With a straight run, they had no hope of catching him.
His Berserk and Frenzy skills were now on cooldown for five minutes. During that time, he had no intention of engaging them further—he’d simply lead them on a chase, and when his skills refreshed, strike again.
Gradually, the Dominion members realized Zhang Shan's strategy, but were helpless to do anything. They couldn’t just abandon pursuit.
"Boss, what do we do now? Six-Barreled Bodhisattva keeps running—we can’t cut him off!"
"Doesn’t matter—just chase him down. I refuse to believe he can run forever. Wolf Slope is large, but it has an end. When he reaches it, he’ll have to turn back."
The East Sea Dragon King, having been brought down once, lost no experience thanks to the support’s revival, but his humiliation was severe, especially with his axe looted by Zhang Shan. Now his fury was at its peak. He would not rest until Zhang Shan was defeated.
"Should we call in the others? There are over three hundred more outside Wolf Slope."
"Bring them all in! Spread out in a fan formation and press forward. If Six-Barreled Bodhisattva dares to double back, stun and finish him off!"
"Understood, Boss."
