Upon hearing Jiang Hao’s words, Su Qingli’s curiosity deepened, yet she restrained herself from probing further. She understood well that everyone harbors their own secrets, and pressing too hard might fracture the delicate truce they had just begun to rebuild. Besides, Jiang Hao had said he would reveal everything when the time was right, so there was no need to rush.

Afterward, Jiang Hao helped Su Qingli clean both the kitchen and the dining area. He gathered the broken items in the front hall and piled them aside, planning to call a renovation company the next day to handle the repairs.

By ten o’clock, the street had grown quiet, with few pedestrians in sight. Su Qingli pulled down the shutter and locked it before suddenly realizing, “I forgot you haven’t left yet… I’ll open it for you now. You should go home and rest.”

But Jiang Hao shook his head.

He stepped in front of her and said earnestly, “Those troublemakers just came looking for you. You want me to leave now? You’re not worried about yourself, but I can’t not be. I’m staying tonight to keep you company. If anything happens, at least I can protect you.”

Jiang Hao’s words made Su Qingli blush slightly. She too was worried—afraid those thugs might come back for revenge. So him staying was the best and most sensible choice.

The problem was, the shop had only one bed, just enough for her alone. If Jiang Hao stayed, where would he sleep? Surely not on a bench.

Noticing her hesitation, Jiang Hao shrugged it off, “Qingli, don’t worry about me. I’m a grown man; I can manage.”

“But…” Su Qingli hesitated.

“No buts,” Jiang Hao said firmly. He arranged the single bed and helped carry the bedding over.

“Alright, you go rest. I’ll just make do on the bench tonight,” he said with a smile.

Su Qingli climbed into bed, while Jiang Hao lay down on the bench. The restaurant’s benches were square with backs; he lined up three side by side to lie across them. But it was definitely uncomfortable—solid wood with gaps in the middle, it was hard enough to sit on, let alone lie down.

Seeing Jiang Hao clearly uncomfortable, Su Qingli hesitated, then sighed softly.

She stood and said, “You should come sleep on the bed…”

Hearing this, Jiang Hao sat up abruptly, staring at her in disbelief.

Su Qingli was actually inviting him onto the bed!

This was unprecedented!

Jiang Hao and Su Qingli had been married for several years and had lived in the home of Zhang Liping and Su Bingming for quite some time. Though sharing a room, they always slept separately—Su Qingli on the bed, Jiang Hao on the floor.

He had never once shared a bed with her.

Yet now, Su Qingli was voluntarily asking him to rest on her single bed. How could he not be stunned?

And alongside his shock came joy—his efforts had finally borne fruit!

“Still not coming up? Do I have to coax you?” Su Qingli turned away, embarrassed.

Without hesitation, Jiang Hao jumped off the bench and swiftly climbed into bed, pulling the covers over himself.

“Be gentle, don’t break the bed,” Su Qingli chided, her tone masking a flurry of shyness and nervousness.

After all, this was the first time she’d ever shared a bed with a man since childhood.

“Don’t worry, the bed won’t break. I picked sturdy furniture,” Jiang Hao chuckled.

Su Qingli said nothing further, pulling the covers up to hide her flushed face.

Jiang Hao wasn’t foolish enough to pull the covers down; he knew to give her space and not rush things, lest he make matters worse.

Lying side by side on the small single bed, they were very close—too close for comfort.

But it was precisely this closeness that filled Jiang Hao with genuine happiness.

Still, he stayed still to avoid giving her the wrong impression.

As the saying goes, haste makes waste.

“You… you’re on top of me,” Su Qingli said awkwardly, her voice tinged with embarrassment.

Jiang Hao immediately apologized and scooted over.

Then he remarked, “Qingli, this is probably the first time we’ve ever slept together like this.”

“Mm,” Su Qingli responded softly.

“How does it feel?” Jiang Hao asked with a smile.

Her face turned even redder, her heart pounding wildly in her chest.

“Feel? What kind of feeling? What are you expecting from me?” she asked, cheeks burning with both shyness and mild annoyance.

Jiang Hao quickly closed his mouth, refraining from saying anything inappropriate.

“I’m only letting you sleep on the bed because I’m worried you might catch a cold. Don’t do anything improper. I warn you, no taking clothes off, no funny business tonight,” Su Qingli cautioned.

“Don’t worry. I’m not that impatient,” Jiang Hao said earnestly.

Hearing this, Su Qingli finally relaxed.

An hour passed.

Su Qingli remained awake, naturally—how could she sleep peacefully with a man beside her?

Jiang Hao also couldn’t fall asleep. This was the first time sharing a bed with Su Qingli, even if it was just sleeping side by side with nothing more. Still, it brought him great joy.

As the saying goes, happiness lifts the spirit; his good mood kept him awake.

“Shall we talk?” Jiang Hao suggested.

“Alright, you speak. I’m listening,” Su Qingli nodded.

Jiang Hao began recounting the brief but cherished years they spent together in college.

Listening to their shared past, Su Qingli felt a mix of embarrassment and a long-lost warmth.

Her heart finally settled, and before she knew it, she drifted into sleep.
