Chapter 41: Lower Your Head
“Gu Zhenzhi, put this on!” Ruan Cha’s crisp voice rang out. Gu Zhenzhi glanced at the bear ears for barely two seconds before replying with a bone-deep indifference, “In your dreams.”
Accompanying her to this amusement park was already the limit of his tolerance.
“Really not even a little?” Ruan Cha gazed at him, her eyes shimmering with pitiful tears.
“No.” Gu Zhenzhi’s expression was cold, his deep, ink-black eyes full of resistance.
“How could you be like this? You promised to cheer me up, but now…”
She trailed off, dejectedly putting the bear ears back on the shelf and sighing apologetically to the salesgirl, “Sorry, I won’t take this after all.”
The salesgirl glanced at Ruan Cha’s eyes brimming with disappointment, her whole demeanor drooping, looking listless and small.
A flood of sympathy surged in the salesgirl’s heart.
“Sir, our ears are all designed for couples. If you only let your girlfriend wear them, people will say you don’t love her. It’s bound to invite gossip…”
Gu Zhenzhi’s gaze remained indifferent as he stood tall and unmoving.
Ruan Cha watched as the girl spoke on her behalf, her curled lashes lowered, slender white fingers nervously twisted together. “Thank you for speaking up for me. Actually, ever since we got together, I’ve known he doesn’t really like me that much. It’s just my wishful thinking…”
As she spoke, her thin shoulders trembled slightly, and a faint mist gathered in her eyes.
The salesgirl’s heart ached at the sight.
How could anyone bear to hurt such an adorable girl? What a scoundrel.
Righteous anger welled up in the salesgirl. She placed a comforting hand on Ruan Cha’s shoulder, seeking justice for her. “Sir, if you don’t like her, please don’t stay together just like this. It may mean nothing to you, but to a girl, it’s a huge hurt.”
Gu Zhenzhi’s eyes swept over the indignant salesgirl and landed on Ruan Cha, who stood behind her, gazing at him with a wounded, pitiful look.
It was as if a soft cat’s paw brushed his heart.
He was perfectly aware this was one of her silly, childish games.
And yet—
He couldn’t resist.
“Buy them,” Gu Zhenzhi finally surrendered to Ruan Cha.
Her smile bloomed with triumph, mist gathering in her upturned eyes, delicate and swirling.
Like a pool of clear water, rippling freely in his gaze.
Ruan Cha carried the rabbit ears and the bear ears ahead, putting them on as she walked.
After adjusting them, she tilted her head cutely and asked, “Gu Zhenzhi, do I look good?”
Gu Zhenzhi glanced sideways at her. In the sunlight, her delicate features seemed haloed with a gentle glow. Her small face was even more striking beneath the soft, silly rabbit ears perched quietly atop her head.
Like a pure and innocent little bunny.
“Yes.” Even a single word of affirmation from Gu Zhenzhi felt like a giant step forward to Ruan Cha.
She grinned in satisfaction, then took out the bear ears and looked up into his eyes. “Bend down.”
Gu Zhenzhi glanced at the bear ears in her hand, his whole face spelling out resistance.
Ruan Cha caught his mood instantly. “Gu Zhenzhi, please, please?”
She took a step forward, her small arms encircling his waist, her cheek pressed gently against his chest, rubbing softly against his suit.
The girl in his arms was as soft as a kitten.
Looking at the top of her head, Gu Zhenzhi felt as though a thunderbolt had crashed into the depths of his heart, long since calm as a still pond.
And then—
It gently exploded.
