Chapter 141: The First Order, Worth 50 Million Dollars
The little girl had been spirited away, and Gao Ran followed, staring at Zhang Tianfeng with wide eyes.
"You spend all day trying to snatch Yun Qian from me. If you’re so capable, why don't you have one of your own?"
Those nearby didn't catch the full context, hearing only the mention of having another child, and exclaimed in surprise.
"Is one sweet little girl not enough? You two are planning another?"
"That’s the base structure determining the superstructure for you. A handsome man and a beautiful woman—it’s no wonder their child is so bright and sweet."
"No, you’ve misunderstood!"
Gao Ran’s face flushed as she tried to explain, but a middle-aged woman nearby gave a knowing look and whispered about how they understood and that there was nothing wrong with getting married early, effectively blocking any room for Gao Ran to clarify.
Helpless, she could only vent her frustration on Zhang Tianfeng. She reached for his waist, pinched a soft spot, and instinctively learned how to "change channels"—much like switching stations on an old black-and-white television.
Zhang Tianfeng winced in pain, but he dared not cry out while still holding the little girl in his arms.
"Big Brother, am I too heavy? Is it hard for you to carry me?"
"Not at all. Qianqian is very light; it’s no trouble for me."
"But your face looks so pale—do you have a cold?"
As she spoke, Yun Qian placed her hand against his forehead to check, then touched her own.
"Your temperature is indeed a bit high. You must be coming down with a cold."
Seeing this, Gao Ran could no longer hold it in and burst into laughter.
"Qianqian, boys usually have higher body temperatures than girls. Your Big Brother is just physically weak; he has no strength, but he’s still trying to put on a brave face."
Physically weak? He wondered who it was, just a few mornings ago, who had been crying out and begging for mercy. Zhang decided to keep a mental tally of that debt—to be settled another day!
Yun Qian remarked, "It’s okay, being weak can be fixed. Grandpa Village Chief has deer velvet at home. Next time I go back, I’ll bring some for Big Brother."
"Then thank you, Qianqian. Let’s head inside; the sun is getting too strong, let’s not get heatstroke."
Back in the lounge, Wang Tiancai quickly offered his seat. Zhang Tianfeng declined, giving it to today's little hero, Yun Qian.
Zhang sat nearby and said, "Qianqian, those foreigners might ask you to do a demonstration later. I’ll teach you some common phrases beforehand so you can really impress them, how about that?"
"Okay! Those uncles and aunties seem so interesting."
Not just interesting, but wealthy! They were the big fish.
As expected, Zhang Tianfeng’s prediction held true. After the foreign guests finished their discussions, their interpreter approached and immediately made a request: they wanted Yun Qian to film a specialized video under their direction for promotional purposes.
Gao Ran was stunned. Did this guy really have a gift for "foreseeing things like a god"? In business, guessing his opponents so accurately was one thing, but now even the foreigners were falling into his predictions? If that were the case, wouldn’t her own little secrets be completely under his control?
"Respected lady, your request is quite reasonable, but there is one thing we need you to understand."
"This little girl comes from an extremely impoverished and underdeveloped region. Her purpose in coming here is to help her family and friends escape poverty."
"Therefore, you must clearly state at the beginning, middle, and end of the video that this product is specifically for poverty alleviation."
"Sir, we don’t quite understand what you mean."
Cultural differences left the wealthy foreigners confused, and the poor quality of the official interpreter didn't help. It was clear the translator hadn't prepared.
But Zhang Tianfeng was prepared. He reframed "poverty alleviation" as a foreign "charitable foundation," and they immediately grasped the concept.
"Wow, what a great country."
"Louis, what's so great about it?" a female friend asked.
"For every toy we purchase, they extract 50% of the net profit to fund impoverished, underdeveloped areas."
"What? 50%?"
"Yes, 50%."
Once confirmed, the foreigners' gazes toward Zhang Tianfeng shifted, adding a touch of respect to their shock. Abroad, charitable foundations were often used for tax avoidance—a necessity for capitalists facing high taxes. But seeing this in China, they were inclined to believe it, given the country's unique situation and the reality of its many underdeveloped regions.
"Sir, your request is very reasonable. We accept. Do you have any other suggestions?"
"No, we can proceed to sign the contracts. If you wish to inspect the factory, we can arrange that as well."
"Let's go to the factory first."
"Very well, follow me."
A bus transported the group of foreigners to the factory in Tangwan Town for an on-site experience, returning an hour later. There were six groups of foreign guests, meaning Zhang Tianfeng had to negotiate with all six simultaneously. To simplify, he kept Yun Qian by his side as a small assistant, while Gao Ran naturally took on the role of helping out.
Meanwhile, in the Canton Fair command center, Liu Yueguang didn't dare breathe, staring intently at the screen showing the meeting room where Zhang Tianfeng was located. This setup was intended to prevent failed negotiations, with a team of translators on standby to assist where language barriers might cause issues.
Liu had been waiting there since Zhang’s previous negotiation with Alex, though he hadn't seen the success he’d hoped for back then. He had wanted to rush over to Zhang, but thought better of it. Zhang was different—mysterious, with a unique way of doing things; he couldn't be treated like an ordinary boss. That trust was now paying off as Zhang reeled in a massive order.
Perhaps Zhang didn't realize it, but the woman sitting across from him was a regional purchasing manager for Walmart from the United States. During last year's Canton Fair, she had signed a single order worth $10 million. Though split into several parts and completed only by the beginning of this year, it had broken the record since the fair's inception.
"Xiao Li, how big of an order do you think he’ll sign this time?"
Secretary Xiao Li pondered for a moment. "Given Boss Zhang’s capabilities, I don’t think it will be less than 20 million."
There was no exaggeration in that. Xiao Li had been with Liu for three years and was mature and steady. Even he had found himself charmed by the toys produced by the Lanfang Toy Factory, to say nothing of the children.
"How about a bet? If I win, you treat me to a drink. If you win, I’ll give you ten days of home leave. How’s that?"
"Leader, no backing out of the bet!"
"Pfft, would I back out? Don't be ridiculous!"
If Liu won, a $10 million deal was still respectable, and he’d get a free drink. If Xiao Li won, it meant at least $20 million. Forget the leave—even Liu could afford to take a decent break, and upon his return, he could prepare for a promotion. The youth was so naive not to realize that. Whoever won, he wasn't losing.
Time ticked by. The room was deathly quiet, save for the occasional sound of conversation and signing from the screen. About half an hour later, the final contract was signed. Zhang Tianfeng stood up, shook hands with the six representatives, and exchanged contracts.
"It is an honor for Lanfang Toy Factory to cooperate with all of you."
"Zhang, just make sure you treat this little girl well. Don't let her be wronged, you hear?"
Zhang Tianfeng looked at the bewildered Yun Qian. Wronged? Impossible. He would let himself be wronged before he let this little girl be. Besides, she was about to become a national sensation.
After seeing the guests off, Zhang returned to the meeting room. Gao Ran, who was organizing the contracts, looked up, her voice trembling slightly: "Madman, did we really sign contracts worth 50 million dollars?"
"You saw the whole process, would I lie to you?"
Fifty million!
The figure shattered Liu Yueguang’s composure; he lost his balance and fell to the floor.
"Leader, are you alright?"
"I'm fine, I'm fine! Quick, get the champagne—we’re going to celebrate for Lanfang Toy Factory!"
Fifty million. It was a new record for the Canton Fair. It would likely be a long time before this record was broken again.
