Episode 52: The Whisper of the Bone Core
The blue light of the sand-crystal cage flickered erratically, resembling the breath of a dying patient.
Alicia curled up in the corner. The sand-crystal thorns on her right arm had spread to her shoulder, and each crystal pillar pulsed with a deep, eerie blue glow—the energy fluid injected by Williams resonating with her bone nucleus. Her consciousness felt like a tiny boat tossing amidst violent waves, at times enveloped by the tender fragments of her mother, at times torn apart by the roars of the sand scorpion.
"Mom... is that you?" Alicia whispered into the empty air, her fingertips unconsciously tracing the silver bird totem etched into the crystal wall. Ever since her last counterattack, her mother's consciousness had fallen silent, leaving only this blood-stained totem faintly warm, proving that the burst of blue light had been no illusion.
Suddenly, tiny droplets of moisture oozed from the crystal wall, as though it were dampened by tears.
Alicia’s heart skipped a beat. She pressed close to the cage, laying her ear against the chilling crystal surface. Faint sounds emerged from within—not the buzzing hum of flowing energy, but a rhythmic "thump-thump" resembling a heartbeat, perfectly synchronized with her own pulse.
"The bone nucleus is... responding to me?"
She tried pressing her palm against the totem. The biting chill of the sand crystal suddenly receded, turning warm. A gentle current surged into her palm, softer even than the previous blue light, feeling like a mother's hand gently stroking the top of her head.
"Alicia... my little moon..."
A clear voice resonated in her mind, no longer the vague fragments of before, but complete and carrying a smiling tone. Tears instantly breached Alicia's defenses. For the first time since she could remember, she heard her mother's voice so distinctly.
"Mom!" Her voice choked with sobs. "Where are you? I miss you so much..."
"I'm right here," her mother's voice sighed gently, and a blurred image suddenly bloomed in Alicia's vision—a white laboratory, her mother in a white robe busy at a console, with a pulsating blue bone nucleus soaking in a glass jar. "Ever since the day you were born, I have guarded this secret."
The scene shifted abruptly. Her mother was strapped to a surgical table, while Williams grinned malevolently, holding a syringe, "Isabella, don't force my hand. Use your royal bloodline to nourish the bone nucleus, and the S Tribe will rise!"
Her mother stubbornly turned her head away. "Even in death, I will never let you use the bone nucleus to ravage the vast desert!"
"You think death offers release?" Williams laughed even more maniacally. "I'll inject your DNA into the bone nucleus so you can watch forever as I conquer the world!"
The vision shook violently. Alicia saw her mother suddenly break free, lunging toward the console to inject a tube of golden liquid into the bone nucleus. "This is the Seed of the Desert Soul, cultivated from my heart's blood... Alicia, when you grow up, you must..."
The rest of her words were drowned out by a piercing alarm.
Alicia snapped back to reality. The silver bird totem on the crystal wall had grown piping hot, branding a faint mark onto her palm that was identical to the pattern of the Desert Soul Seed in her mother's vision.
"So you weren't sacrificed after all." Alicia's voice trembled as she finally understood Jones's raving words—that her mother's soul awaited vengeance within the bone nucleus was no empty claim.
"Silly child," her mother's voice carried a sense of relief. "Back then, I willingly let Williams 'succeed.' Only by entering the bone nucleus could I suppress the primal consciousness of the sand scorpion; otherwise, it would have devoured the entire desert a decade ago."
Only then did Alicia notice that although the sand crystals inside her body were growing, they had never spiraled out of control like those of other sand-crystal warriors. Whenever those eerie blue currents flowed toward her heart, they were neutralized by a warm force, dissolving into dots of golden light—it was the defense her mother had erected within the bone nucleus.
"But... Williams said the bone nucleus needs a host to fully awaken." Alicia recalled those warriors controlled by the sand-blood serum. "Was he lying to me?"
"He wasn't lying, but he concealed the most important thing." Her mother's voice suddenly turned grave, and the vision resurfaced—this time from her mother's perspective inside the bone nucleus. Countless black tentacles coiled around the blue core, every single tentacle crawling with scorpion-shaped curses. "The bone nucleus conceals the primal consciousness of the sand scorpion totem, a pure desire for destruction. The host is less a master and more a sacrifice, ultimately to be completely consumed by it."
Cold sweat broke out across Alicia's back. "Then the Seed of the Desert Soul that you injected..."
"...is the key to keeping it in check," her mother's voice carried strength. "It was forged from the sand-watcher's anti-entropy powder mixed with my heart's blood. The moment you inject your blood, it will drain the bone nucleus of its energy, reducing it to an ordinary stone."
The crystal wall shook violently, cutting short their conversation. Heavy footsteps echoed down the corridor, ten times denser than usual, mingled with the harsh scraping of dragged metal equipment.
"Not good!" Her mother's voice grew urgent. "Williams is going to subject you to the forced sacrificial ritual! He must have discovered the existence of the Desert Soul Seed and wants to seize it before you awaken!"
Alicia's heart plummeted to the abyss. Pressing against the crystal wall, she listened to the commotion outside, catching Williams's roar, " Tighten those energy conduits! We must succeed this time! I want her to become the perfect vessel before the full moon!"
"Mom, what should I do?" Alicia dug her fingernails into her palm, droplets of blood staining the silver bird totem. "How do I use the Seed of the Desert Soul? I can't even get out of this damn cage!"
"Listen to me, the Seed of the Desert Soul resides at your heart." Her mother's voice grew fainter, as though fighting against some unseen force. "When the ritual begins, the energy of the bone nucleus will peak; activate it with your blood then... Remember, do not fear the pain, Mother will be with you..."
The voice cut off abruptly, leaving only a piercing ringing in Alicia's mind. The silver bird totem on the crystal wall rapidly dimmed, finally fading into a faint white mark as though it had never existed.
"Mom! Mom!" Alicia beat frantically against the crystal wall, but only cold echoes answered her.
With a loud crash, the stone door of the corridor was shoved open. A dozen sand-crystal warriors filed in, carrying metal scaffolding wrapped in glowing pipelines—equipment clearly intended for the ritual. Williams followed closely behind, the fragments of the Requiem Bone Flute on his mechanical arm glowing dazzlingly.
"It seems you and your mother had a very pleasant chat." Williams's mechanical prosthetic eye swept over the white mark on the crystal wall, a hint of sinister malice flashing in its red light. "Pity, story time is over."
The warriors pressed the pipelines against the crystal wall. Blue current spread along the conduits, and an invisible force suddenly slammed Alicia against the wall, causing her sand-crystal thorns to resonate with the pipelines in a painful, shrill shriek.
"Forced sacrifice is nothing like ordinary fusion," Williams crouched outside the cage door like a beast admiring its prey. "It will hurt a bit, but I promise, you will witness with your own eyes the magnificent awakening of the sand scorpion totem."
He raised a metal circlet covered in spikes, embedded with seven sand crystals that each gleamed with a different colored light. "This is the Seven Emotions Ring. It will forcibly strip away your consciousness, leaving behind a pure bloodline vessel. Rest assured, I'll let your mother's consciousness 'watch' all of this."
Alicia's gaze fell upon the sand crystal at the center of the circlet, where a tiny, slowly rotating scorpion totem was vaguely visible—forged from her mother's bone dust, it emanated a familiar scent of sandalwood mixed with the reek of blood.
"You monster!" Alicia struggled violently, the iron chains lacerating her wrists until blood streamed down. "My mom won't let you get away with this!"
"Her?" Williams laughed wildly. "Right now, she's nothing more than a wisp of a remnant soul in the bone nucleus. Once I control the sand scorpion totem, she'll be the first thing I crush!"
With a sudden snap of his fingers, the sand-crystal warriors activated the pipeline switches.
Intense electrical currents instantly coursed through Alicia's body. She felt her consciousness being forcibly ripped from her physical shell as countless memory fragments flashed before her eyes—her mother holding her to look at the stars when she was little, her father teaching her to identify desert plants, and Williams's malicious grin as he shoved her into the cage.
"No—!"
Just as her consciousness was on the verge of shattering, a burst of golden light erupted from her heart.
The Seed of the Desert Soul had been activated by the current!
Alicia felt her mother's consciousness resurface once more. This time, it was no longer a gentle guardianship, but a resolute force surging along her blood toward the Seven Emotions Ring. The golden radiance collided with the sand crystals of the circlet, producing a harsh, concussive blast.
A sudden, sharp pain wracked Williams's mechanical arm as the bone flute fragments began to grow scorching hot, as though rejecting his control. "What is happening?!" he stared in horror as the sand crystals on the circlet shattered one by one. "How could the Seed of the Desert Soul activate ahead of time?!"
A chilling smile curved the corners of Alicia's lips. Her consciousness, though blurred, was unshakeable—her mother was right; pain was nothing to be feared.
Gathering her remaining strength, she pressed the fragment of her mother's bone dust hidden in her collar directly against the mark of the Desert Soul Seed on her chest.
"In the name of Alicia, activate!"
The golden radiance swelled violently, shattering the restraints of the sand-crystal cage! The pipelines and scaffolding melted instantly in the blinding light, and the sand-crystal warriors shrieked miserably as their bodies began to disintegrate inch by inch under the sweep of the golden glow.
Williams was blown backward by the shockwave, slamming against the stone wall of the corridor as the bone flute fragments on his mechanical arm shattered completely. Gazing at Alicia bathed in the golden light within the cage, he felt for the first time a bone-deep terror.
That was neither the deep blue of the bone nucleus nor the golden hue of the Desert Soul Seed, but a silvery-white woven from the intertwining of both lights, reeking of pure destruction!
Alicia slowly opened her eyes. Half her pupils reflected her mother's tenderness, the other half the fierce cruelty of the sand scorpion. A pair of colossal wings unfurled behind her—the left wing composed of golden feathers, the right of deep blue bone membrane, resembling an amalgamation of angel and demon.
"Williams," her voice was terrifyingly calm, carrying the overlap of two consciousnesses. "You got it backward."
Amidst the silvery-white radiance, the crystal walls of the cage cracked inch by inch.
"You are the one who should be watching."
When the light finally dissipated, Alicia stood amidst the ruins, holding half a melted Seven Emotions Ring, its surface still dusted with the golden powder of her mother's remains. Rapid footsteps sounded from the far end of the corridor—guards drawn by the commotion.
Yet her gaze bypassed the chaos, fixing instead on the direction of Black Wind Pass. Out there, a matching jade pendant was growing hot, pulsing with a sympathetic tremor in time with her heartbeat.
The Seed of the Desert Soul had been activated, but it had thoroughly shattered the equilibrium of the bone nucleus. Alicia could feel the primal consciousness of the sand scorpion staging a frantic counter-offensive, while her mother's power depleted rapidly.
She had to find Lu Chen before she was completely consumed.
Meanwhile, in the shadows of the corridor, Williams clutched his bleeding mechanical arm while a bizarre smile curved his lips. Clutched in his palm was a pinch of golden powder he had scooped up from the fragments of the Seven Emotions Ring—residue from the Seed of the Desert Soul, more than enough for him to analyze a countermeasure.
"The game... has only just begun." Licking the blood from the corner of his mouth, he vanished into the darkness.
In the distance, the energy tower abruptly blared a piercing alarm, red signal lights flashing frantically in the nocturnal sky—the energy field of the bone nucleus was spinning out of control, more violently than at any point in history.
Alicia clenched her fists, her wings beating softly to scatter golden sand grains. She knew the true decisive battle had begun. And deep within her, the bone nucleus whispered ever more clearly, sounding half like an urge and half like a warning.
Beneath her mother's tenderness and the sand scorpion's malice, that whisper seemed to harbor a third voice—ancient, weathered, and bearing a sigh belonging to a bygone era.
