“Why? Yan Peng, you still have the nerve to ask why? If you had shown even the slightest bit of ambition, would I have ended up like this? It’s all because you’re so useless. Everything I want, I have to fight for myself. How could I ever have chosen to marry you?”

After venting, Tian Yulan saw that Yan Peng still dared to shout at her at the top of his lungs. Her anger only intensified, and she pointed at him and launched into another tirade.

“Tian Yulan, you’re completely insane. You’ll say anything. I’m useless? You regret marrying me? If you hadn’t married me, would you have the life you have now?”

Yan Peng was truly furious. Looking at the woman before him, raging like a madwoman, he could hardly believe she was his wife. She had actually belittled him to his face and even said she regretted marrying him. No man could accept that.

In his view, anger was one thing, but there were some things that could never be said, no matter how furious one was. Regardless of what had happened to Tian Yulan, after more than a decade together, after more than a decade of bowing and scraping before her, all he had received in return was this. How could his heart not turn cold?

“What right do you have to say that? The life I have now is the result of my own hard work. What does it have to do with you?”

“Tian Yulan, you really have some nerve. Apart from the living expenses I keep each month, I hand the rest of my salary over to you. And besides me, my parents give us tens of thousands every month. You call that building this life through your own efforts? Would you have what you have now without us?”

“Your parents’ money all goes toward Ziyou, and your money goes toward paying off the mortgage. Why don’t I have the right to say it? I take care of our son every day, and I have to take care of you too. What are you good for? Whenever something happens, you run to your parents. Whenever you run out of money, you run to your parents. Aren’t you a man? You need your parents to support your wife and child. You’re nothing but a giant baby.”

“Tian Yulan!” Yan Peng roared furiously.

Tian Yulan was not afraid of him at all. Pointing at him, she continued berating him. “What are you shouting for? What right do you have to shout? If you’re so capable, stop relying on your parents and support your wife and son with your own abilities. But you can’t, can you? Apart from playing games and slacking off at work all day, what else are you capable of?”

Yan Peng breathed heavily, his lips pressed into a tight line. Pointing at himself, he said, “I’m incapable? Even if I rely on my parents, that’s still my ability. I’m their only son. What belongs to them belongs to me—and to Ziyou. Why shouldn’t I rely on them?”

“Do you have to be born into a family like yours and work yourself to death earning money before that counts as ability? And what are you earning money for? Isn’t it to live a better life? I already have the means to live well, so why should I work myself to the bone like you? Just to hear you praise me once? That’s what you call ability?”

“Yan Peng, how dare you look down on where I come from? How dare you look down on my family?”

Like a cat with its fur standing on end, Tian Yulan lunged at Yan Peng in a frenzy. Caught off guard, he crashed into the computer desk, and a sharp pain shot through his thigh.

“What right do you have to look down on my family, to look down on my background? Get out! Get out of here!”

“You…”

Yan Peng pointed at Tian Yulan as he watched her crouch on the floor, sobbing uncontrollably. At that moment, what he felt most strongly was rage.

“What an unreasonable woman. I can’t be bothered with you.”

Yan Peng picked up his bag and, without sparing Tian Yulan so much as a glance, slammed the door behind him and left.

What had happened that day had pushed his patience with Tian Yulan to its limit. He had no idea what had happened to her, but whatever it was, it was no excuse for her to vent her anger on him and humiliate him.

Hearing the thunderous slam of the door as Yan Peng left, Tian Yulan began to cry even harder. In a fit of rage, she screamed, “Go! Go, then! Don’t ever come back! Get as far away as you can!”

“Waaah…”

Tian Yulan sobbed loudly for a long while before suddenly raising her head, her expression twisted with fury.

“It’s all because of you, Nan Li! You’re the one who turned me into this! You made me lose my job. I’ll never forgive you. I absolutely will not let you get away with this…”

Convinced that Nan Li had deliberately sabotaged her, Tian Yulan burned with resentment. She had called Nan Li early that morning, but Nan Li had refused to help her. Yet after Tian Yulan fainted, the supplies from Warmth arrived. If Nan Li had not intentionally harmed her, how could everything have happened so coincidentally?

Thinking of all the battles she and Nan Li had fought in the past, Tian Yulan’s eyes reddened. Her tears had ruined her makeup, making her look even more frightening and ferocious.

After leaving the house, Yan Peng’s anger still had not subsided. He sat in the car for a long time, thinking about what had just happened. He did not feel that he had done anything wrong.

They had lived this way for so many years. He was indeed lazy, but that was because Tian Yulan was too domineering. If they had managed before, why had everything suddenly erupted today? And why had she said such vicious things?

When dealing with Tian Yulan, he might have been shameless, but that did not mean he had no self-respect. She had cursed and humiliated him to his face. Of course he could not accept it.

He suspected that Tian Yulan must have suffered some kind of shock. Part of him wanted to ask her about it, but after everything that had happened, he no longer felt inclined to do so.

After sitting there and thinking for a long time, he finally started the car, left the residential complex, and drove toward his parents’ villa.

When Yan Peng returned to the family villa, his parents were having lunch with their grandson. Seeing him come back alone, his mother immediately looked surprised.

“Why are you back by yourself?”

Yan Peng walked straight over and sat down, saying irritably, “I’m starving. Mom, get me a bowl and some chopsticks too. I didn’t even have breakfast.”

“How come you didn’t have breakfast? Where’s Lanlan? Didn’t she cook for you?” his mother asked, puzzled.

Yan Peng’s expression changed slightly, but he quickly recovered. “The shopping center is celebrating its anniversary today, so she’s extremely busy and didn’t have time to take care of me.”

He had not told his parents or his son that Tian Yulan had fainted the previous day, and naturally he could not tell them what had happened today either.

“Mom, hurry up. I’m starving to death.”

Yan Peng’s father was more perceptive than his mother. He knew that something must have happened between his son and daughter-in-law; otherwise, Yan Peng would not have come home in the middle of the day.

Still, he said nothing and merely urged his wife, “Stop asking questions. Our son finally came home for lunch, so hurry and get him a bowl and chopsticks.”

“Oh, all right. I’m going.”

After his mother left, Yan Ziyou lightly poked his father with one small hand and asked in a quiet voice, “Dad, did you and Mom have another fight?”

“You’re just a child. Why are you so curious? No, your mother really is busy.”

Yan Peng brushed his son off, then said to his father, “Dad, Lanlan really is busy these days and doesn’t have time for me or Ziyou. So I was thinking that the two of us could stay here for a few days.”

The moment his father heard this, he happily replied, “Of course! You and Ziyou can stay as long as you like. It would be even better if you never left.”

“What do you mean, never left?” his mother asked curiously as she returned with a bowl and chopsticks and placed them in front of her son.

His father smiled. “Our son just said that he and Ziyou are going to stay here for a few days.”

His mother was overjoyed. “That couldn’t be better. But Pengpeng, did you and Lanlan have a fight?”

“No, Mom. Stop imagining things. Lanlan has been very busy lately and doesn’t have time for the two of us. What, are you saying you object to us staying here?”

Yan Peng’s father immediately signaled to his wife with his eyes, telling her not to ask anything else. Wasn’t it obvious what had happened? Why keep questioning him?

“How could I object? Your mother would love nothing more than for you and her eldest grandson to stay here forever. You’re a family—why insist on living apart? This villa is so big, and it’s just your father and me. There isn’t even any life in the place. It’s wonderful that you can come back.”

Although Yan Peng’s mother was not particularly tactful, she was perceptive enough. The reason she resented Tian Yulan was entirely because Tian Yulan had taken her son and eldest grandson away from her.

Why did the elderly couple want a second child?

Wasn’t it because they felt too lonely? They had hoped that if Tian Yulan had another child, she would have to return and let them help care for it. Then the whole family could be reunited. Wouldn’t that be wonderful?

Yan Peng really was hungry. He ate in great mouthfuls, and halfway through the meal, he turned to Yan Ziyou and said, “Son, rest for a while after lunch. This afternoon, Dad will take you out to play soccer.”

“Really?” Yan Ziyou’s eyes lit up, but they soon dimmed again. “But I have a lesson this afternoon. And if Mom finds out that I didn’t study and went to play soccer, she’ll definitely be angry.”

Seeing his son’s expression, Yan Peng felt a surge of pity. He understood all too well how difficult things were for the boy.

“Then Dad will take you to your lesson this afternoon. Afterward, we’ll go play soccer. As for your mother, she’s so busy that she doesn’t have time to bother with us. If I don’t tell her and you don’t tell her, she’ll never know.”

Both Yan Peng’s father and mother nodded in agreement.

“That’s right, Ziyou. Listen to your father. Studying is important, but you can’t spend every hour of every day studying. Our family isn’t one that has to rely on academic success to get ahead. There’s no need to push yourself so hard. Playing soccer and getting some exercise now and then is good for your health.”

With his father, grandfather, and grandmother all in agreement—and his mother nowhere around—Yan Ziyou felt a little thrill of excitement.

“All right, Dad. We’ll play soccer after my lesson. I haven’t played in ages. Last time, my uncle was going to take me out and teach me some soccer skills. Dad, should we invite my uncle and Huanhuan too?”

“Huh?”

Yan Peng’s expression froze as he remembered what had happened the night before last. Shaking his head, he said, “No. They’re busy. Today, it’ll just be you and me facing off.”

“All right.”
