Chapter 56 Do you two come in male and female?
"There were only four people in that room at the time. Who on earth could harbor malicious intent against me?"
Upon returning home, Zhou Mo's mind was entirely consumed by this single question. The moment he opened the door, the doctor-brain violently punched his cranial vault right off his head, cursing as it scurried into the refrigerator to cool down.
Chanting the same question over and over again—at such a young age, couldn't he spare a few thoughts for young women instead?
What an absolute exhaustion for the brain.
Unable to come up with an answer for the time being, Zhou Mo prepared to wash his face and order some takeout, only to be greeted by an intensely enticing aroma.
"What is going on here?"
Perplexed, he hurried to the kitchen and pushed the door open, only to find the dog-brain rolling around right next to a pile of onions, while the single-minded-brain stood beside the stove, tossing food in a wok. Next to them, resting on a makeshift stand, was an old tablet fished out from god knows where, playing a cooking tutorial video.
In an instant, Zhou Mo's system crashed.
"You guys..."
"Every single day, you manage to rewrite my entire worldview..."
The single-minded-brain didn't even spare Zhou Mo a glance. One eyeball was fixed firmly on the wok, while the other stared unblinkingly at the actions on the tablet. With a chilling sense of uncanniness, Zhou Mo noticed that the single-minded-brain was mirroring the master chef on screen step for step.
"Well, I'll be..."
Watching the single-minded-brain's practiced movements, Zhou Mo couldn't help himself; he pulled out a pair of chopsticks, plucked a piece straight from the wok, and tasted it.
"Oh!"
"The flavor is actually decent?"
"Where on earth did you guys even get these ingredients?"
The dog-brain finally managed to escape the radius of the onion's airborne assault and pointed toward the living room. Zhou Mo looked back and saw the main brain slouched in front of the computer, seemingly browsing for something.
Surveying the chaotic kitchen, Zhou Mo fell silent for a long moment before finally letting out a sigh. "Fine, just remember to clean up the kitchen afterward."
Having his brains cook for him—just watching for two seconds made Zhou Mo feel like he was going to have nightmares. Even though the taste wasn't bad, for some inexplicable reason, he found it rather difficult to bring himself to eat.
Walking over to the living room, he discovered that the main brain was currently shopping online, with a payment receipt displayed right beside the browser window—explaining the pile of groceries just delivered.
Zhou Mo's eyelids twitched. "Don't tell me you had the delivery guy bring them straight inside the house?"
The main brain rolled its eyes, too lazy to deign such a moronic question with an answer. Was it really that hard to have the delivery guy drop them at the door and leave?
Zhou Mo pinched the bridge of his nose in resignation. "Fine, I am gradually getting used to your out-of-pocket antics. Remember to check on the refrigerator later; otherwise, if you guys keep living in there, everything is going to taste like each other. The money is on this card."
"Do whatever you want. Just remember to call me when dinner is ready..."
Handing the card over to the main brain, Zhou Mo picked his cranial cap up off the floor. Looking at the dust covering it, he really couldn't muster the courage to snap it back onto his head just yet, so he carried it into the bathroom to wash his hair.
Yet the moment that thought crossed his mind, Zhou Mo felt like something wasn't quite right. "Am I accepting all this way too fast? Am I losing my mind, or is this world losing its mind?"
Happily taking the card, the main brain linked it to Zhou Mo's online shopping account without even throwing him a single glance.
"Never mind, whatever. Let's wash my hair first."
Entering the bathroom, Zhou Mo turned on the faucet to rinse the cranial cap, while inside his hollow head, his thoughts raced back to the matter of the infiltrator within the City Guard.
*I need to find a way to flush this person out as soon as possible, or sooner or later, they're going to make a move against me...*
*Putting myself in their shoes, if I were a member of Primordial Truth, I'd probably view myself as a thorn in the eye and a thorn in the flesh.*
*Most importantly, the people of Primordial Truth know very well that Sun Zhongwen, Liao Feng, and Zhang Shuo's brains weren't stolen by them. The person hiding within the City Guard might realize very soon that all these incidents are connected to me—or perhaps, they've already figured it out.*
*This person will eventually uncover the secret I'm hiding, so I absolutely cannot drag my feet. I have to root them out ASAP.*
Zhou Mo meticulously scrubbed every inch of scalp on the cranial cap, nearly sprinkling laundry detergent on it by mistake, before quickly grabbing the shampoo and resuming his train of thought.
*Although today's events helped narrow down the suspects to four people, who could those four actually be?*
*Xia An has shown hostility toward me, Sun Yue secretly probed me, Chen Xiu is an enigma whose depth I can't read, and Zhang Huai'an...*
"It shouldn't be Zhang Huai'an. If someone can act that much like an absolute grunt and still be an undercover agent, his depth would be unfathomable."
*Besides, Zhang Huai'an's injuries haven't healed this whole time. With his mobility restricted, he shouldn't be reckless enough to risk murdering Sun Zhongwen.*
Feeling rather troubled, Zhou Mo rinsed the foam from his hair with clean water, applied conditioner, and kept massaging.
*I don't know much about any of these people. How am I supposed to investigate this?*
*Could it be that I missed some other clues? Surely there couldn't be something wrong with the previous cases themselves, could there?*
Midway through scrubbing his hair, Zhou Mo suddenly froze. "Wait, it actually seems like there is..."
*I remember the City Guard had already taken notice of Messe Clinic, right? Why haven't they made a move yet?*
*Chen Xiu didn't seem to know anything about me acting as bait, so we can cross Chen Xiu off the list, leaving only Xia An and Sun Yue.*
*And looking back, Xia An's arrival time at the scene was a bit subtle...*
*You could say that at the time, it wasn't me who was in danger, but rather Zhang Shuo who was about to lose his life...*
"Heh, could it be that Xia An didn't come to save me? But rather to save Zhang Shuo?"
"Thinking back now, it really does seem fishy. Xia An managed to rush over, so why did the rest of the City Guard focus on securing the crime scene first instead of pursuing the killer? With vehicles available, could they really not catch that hound?"
"Most importantly, this whole accident was orchestrated by Xia An in the first place."
The more Zhou Mo thought about it, the more intriguing it became. He vigorously shook the water droplets off his cranial cap, picked up the blow dryer, and began styling his hair.
"At first, she gave me the impression of being extremely smart, only to act foolish at the very last crucial moment."
"Her behavior feels completely disjointed. When dealing with me, she's frighteningly sharp, even managing to acutely spot the issues with my condition."
"Yet when dealing with other cases, she fails to notice even the most obvious traces of evidence. That is clearly abnormal."
"Hahahaha..."
"No wonder you wouldn't let me investigate the case of the missing files. So you were the inner ghost all along~"
Happily, Zhou Mo clamped the styled cranial cap back onto the top of his head. Just then, the main brain knocked on the bathroom door, casting a sidelong glance at the smiling Zhou Mo with a silent expression:
What are you idiot-grinning about?
Dinner's ready.
Tilting his head beneath his dark, hollow eye sockets, Zhou Mo asked, "Big Brain, can I ask you a question?"
The wrinkles on the main brain's surface morphed into a series of question marks: What do you want to ask?
Zhou Mo grinned broadly. "Do you guys come in male and female?"
The main brain: ...
