His thoughts raced swiftly, crawling up along Zhou Mo’s arm to his head before retreating back inside, the skull sealing tightly without a trace. Zhou Mo’s heart skipped a beat.

“Why is the City Guard here?”

In this world, the City Guard functioned like the police, but Zhou Mo never expected their investigative speed to be this rapid! Only one night had passed, yet they had already found him? He had deliberately avoided surveillance cameras on his way back… Could it have been that taxi driver?

“Open the door!”

Hearing the firm voice outside, Zhou Mo forced himself to stay calm and replied, “Coming.”

When the door swung open, a strikingly beautiful woman with voluminous curly hair, clad in leather jacket and pants and carrying a designer handbag, stood at the entrance. Behind her was a fair-haired man with a square face and a very upright demeanor.

The pair’s appearance gave Zhou Mo a strong visual shock; they looked nothing like typical City Guard officers.

“You must be Zhou Mo, right? I’m Xia An, captain of the Zhongshan Road City Guard. We have some case-related matters that require your cooperation. Please fulfill your civic duty,” the woman said.

Zhou Mo glanced at the identification card and looked at the fashionable woman with some surprise.

“Huh?”

“She isn’t arresting me right away?”

The square-faced man frowned slightly. “Please don’t look a lady like that so directly.”

Only then did Zhou Mo realize his gaze had been rude. Suppressing his doubts and unease, he wore an apologetic expression and asked, “Sorry, um… may I ask what matters you need my cooperation with?”

The fair-haired man cleared his throat. “We have a case that involves you…”

Before he could finish, Xia An suddenly smiled with a commanding charm and asked, “May we come in to talk? Since this concerns a murder case, wouldn’t it be too conspicuous for us to remain outside?”

She winked playfully at Zhou Mo.

One had to admit, Captain Xia An was truly beautiful, her figure stunning—most men would have difficulty refusing such a request.

Yet Zhou Mo felt a shiver run down his spine—not because he disliked women, but because he was secretly grateful that he hadn’t been lazy yesterday and had cleaned the floor thoroughly.

Otherwise, no matter how many mouths he had, he wouldn’t be able to explain today’s situation.

“Uh, please come in.”

Zhou Mo stepped aside to open the door.

Xia An gave him a sweet smile, then sashayed into the room, glancing around slightly.

The square-faced man looked awkward but kept silent this time.

Zhou Mo composed himself and poured two cups of hot water. “Sorry, I live alone and don’t have much to offer. May I ask what brings you here?”

Since these City Guard officers hadn’t arrested him immediately, it meant they hadn’t found any connection between him and the corpse in the Messer Clinic.

So, there was no need to panic. Instead, Zhou Mo’s curiosity was piqued.

Xia An tucked her long hair behind her ear, revealing pretty earrings, and tried to ease the tension. “You don’t have to be nervous. We’re not here for anything too serious. Have you heard of the Messer Clinic?”

Though he knew the matter likely had little to do with him, Zhou Mo’s heart hammered fiercely in his chest.

He wore a puzzled expression. “Messer Clinic? Not really. What about it?”

Xia An sighed. “I suppose you’ve heard the urban legend of the Brain-Eating Demon? Actually, we caught the Brain-Eating Demon last night.”

“Oh? They caught it? Perhaps they found the body…”

Zhou Mo hid his reaction but showed a hint of surprise. “Ms. Xia, do you mean the Brain-Eating Demon is a serial killer? But what does this have to do with me?”

Xia An nodded solemnly, leaning in slightly and lowering her voice as she said, “The Brain-Eating Demon is indeed human. We had already traced some clues and tracked it to the Messer Clinic, where we captured the Demon. However, he refused to say anything. At the scene, we found a victim list—and your name was on it.”

“And you are the only one still alive.”

“A list? So that’s why…”

Zhou Mo felt a slight relief but wore a suitably terrified expression. “What? I’m on the list? But isn’t the Brain-Eating Demon only supposed to target the intelligent and gifted? Why am I on it?”

Xia An quickly gestured to calm him down. “Don’t worry. The Brain-Eating Demon hasn’t confessed yet, but we have him in custody. There’s no need to panic.”

Zhou Mo hurriedly asked, “Could he have accomplices?”

This was no act—Zhou Mo knew well the Brain-Eating Demon had at least one accomplice!

Li Ya’s height matched the shorter figure from his memories. Li Ya was already dead by his own hand, but the taller accomplice was still at large!

If the taller killer learned he was alive, who knew what chaos might ensue…

If the murderer got scared and reported to the authorities, that would only complicate matters.

Xia An raised an eyebrow. “Do you distrust the City Guard’s capabilities? Rest assured, if we find any accomplices, we will notify you immediately and protect you.”

Zhou Mo nodded earnestly. “Thank you so much!”

Xia An thought for a moment, then took a business card from her bag and pushed it toward Zhou Mo. “Since nothing urgent has come up here, I’m relieved. This is my number—if you remember anything or encounter any situations, contact me anytime.”

“We still have to continue investigating, so we won’t bother you further.”

After saying this, Xia An stood up, preparing to leave with the fair-haired man.

Zhou Mo quickly pocketed the card and escorted them to the door. “Captain Xia, take care!”

With a graceful, alluring gesture, Xia An led the man and swiftly left the dilapidated apartment building.

Zhou Mo watched their departing figures, closed the door, and pressed his hand against his chest. He could almost hear his heartbeat pounding in his ears.

“I almost thought I was done for…”

“It seems the City Guard hasn’t uncovered anything yet. They probably haven’t disclosed that the killer is already dead to keep it confidential…”

“But I need to act faster.”

“I have to find the second killer before the City Guard does.”

Zhou Mo went to the bathroom and splashed cold water on his face. Looking up at his forehead, he whispered, “This trouble is because of you. You can’t just leave me hanging. I’m sure you don’t want the other killer to be at large either, right?”

With a slight pop, his eyeballs were pulled back into their sockets. Then a crack appeared along his skull, and his eyeballs emerged, bobbing up and down on his head.

Zhou Mo reached up and removed his skullcap, revealing two dark, empty hollows, and smiled.

“Thanks, I’ll treat you to some candy.”

Meanwhile, outside the old residential complex, in a sports car, Xia An bit down on a lollipop, her gaze deep and penetrating as she stared at Zhou Mo’s window.

“Investigate him!”

“I want all information on this Zhou Mo. The blood smell coming from his place almost made me vomit.”

Crunch!

Xia An crushed the lollipop between her teeth.

“Even if this guy isn’t an accomplice of the Brain-Eating Demon, there’s definitely something dirty about him!”
