Chapter 4: Proof of a Past Existence

Zhou Mo clutched his chest, still shaken by the memories that had just flooded his mind.

Watching the brain—its expression grim—dragging its eyeballs over to him, Zhou Mo twitched the corner of his mouth. “It was purely accidental. It must be your memories affecting me.”

The brain shot him a displeased glance. Its eight nerve-like tendrils scuttled rapidly like cockroach legs toward the pillow on the bed. Using the eyeballs, it covered Zhou Mo’s skull, then climbed onto the pillow, sinking comfortably into a small indentation made by its eight stubby legs. The eyeballs connected by optic nerves resembled cat’s paws, tucked neatly in front.

It was strange, really. Normally, a brain should be moist—whether from cerebrospinal fluid or membranes, it should be wet. Yet, once it emerged, it was surprisingly dry and, unlike ordinary brains, seemed far less fragile.

At the very least, Zhou Mo was certain those eyeballs were sturdier than his own bones.

“Heh…”

“This is getting more and more absurd…”

He pinched his cheek, making sure he wasn’t dreaming.

Though even if he were, it would be hard to conjure such an outlandish dream.

Watching the top of the brain rise and fall gently under the skull covering it, Zhou Mo realized his tolerance was exceptional; otherwise, anyone else might have lost their sanity by now.

After washing his face in the bathroom—keeping his head low to avoid water flooding into the empty eye sockets—Zhou Mo calmly settled in front of his computer. He “looked” at the screen through the two dark, hollow eye sockets.

He wasn’t sure how he was seeing anything at all. The view through the empty eye sockets was actually broader than normal vision. Overall, it was a rather novel experience.

“Maybe I’ve already become some kind of monster,” he muttered to himself.

With that self-mockery, Zhou Mo refocused and began searching for relevant information.

The current time was 7:35 a.m. on October 20, 2024.

That was eleven days after the date he had seen in the dream...

He typed the name “Liu Tianyou” into the search bar. Soon, a news article appeared.

[On the evening of October 18, 2024, our city received a report: Liu Tianyou, the youngest brain sciences PhD in the country, was found dead at his home. The perpetrator violently removed Dr. Liu’s brain in a brutal and cruel manner. The HY City Urban Guard hereby issues a reward for any information. Citizens of HY City are urged to report any leads promptly!]

“Heh…”

“So you’re Liu Tianyou’s brain?”

Zhou Mo glanced back and noticed that the brain had somehow sprawled out on the bed, lying on its back. The skull cap covered the two eyeballs, and the four nerve tendrils—essentially its legs—twitched occasionally.

Is this really the brain of a brain sciences expert?

So Liu Tianyou and his brain had truly become two different entities?

Shaking off the chaotic thoughts, Zhou Mo flipped through the interface and continued reading related news, quickly uncovering more.
