Chapter 15: Gaining Fame!
The more Zhou Mo pondered, the more certain he became that he had heard this voice before—or rather, his previous self had. The lingering memories within his body instinctively reacted, but the trail abruptly ended there.
Zhou Mo quickly tapped his forehead with his finger. “Are you still alive? Can you give me a bit more memory?”
Yet, the brain inside his head remained silent. Zhou Mo even felt that moving his eyes had become awkward.
This was bad!
Could it be that Liao Feng’s brain was about to die inside his head?
Not only was Liao Feng’s brain on the verge of failing, but Zhou Mo himself was feeling unwell.
He reached out one hand to touch his neck. “My body temperature is rising...”
Then he peeled his eyes away from the kitchen glass and examined them. “My pupils are dilating...”
“And I feel a bit nauseous. Could this be an immune rejection reaction?”
‘Huh?’
‘Why do I know these things?’
‘Was I just... undergoing a medical examination?’
“What is going on?”
Just as Zhou Mo grew anxious, he saw the brain in the pot crawl out, wring the wet gauze dry, and wipe off the water droplets on its body and those eight slender tentacles. Only then did it jump onto Zhou Mo’s shoulder and pry open his skull.
The skull, connected by stitches, bumped against the back of his head, then grabbed Liao Feng’s brain and tossed it back into the pot before comfortably slipping inside to close the skull.
Zhou Mo was speechless.
For some reason, this whole sequence gave Zhou Mo a strong déjà vu, like a soldier jumping onto a tank, throwing out the driver inside, and taking over the vehicle.
So, am I a tank now?
If anything, Zhou Mo felt he might be more like a Gundam than a tank.
But regardless, being able to remove Liao Feng’s brain was good news; at least he didn’t have to worry about it dying inside him.
He looked into the pot and confirmed that Liao Feng’s brain wasn’t completely dead—it was absorbing the residual glucose in the pot—and his feelings grew complicated beyond words.
Good news: Liao Feng’s brain wasn’t going to die.
Bad news: He only had one skull.
Zhou Mo had never experienced anything like this before!
“Hey! You can’t just soak in there all the time, right? If the neighbors see this, I won’t be able to explain it to the City Guard.”
“Wait, if it dries up soaking there, won’t it just dry out in my house?”
Though it was just a brain and not a corpse, brains were tricky to handle!
While Zhou Mo was lost in thought, the eyeball squeezed out of his eye socket and pointed toward the fridge.
Looking at the reflection in the opposite glass, Zhou Mo was speechless.
“Are you sure this is really appropriate? And next time, can you answer me in some other way? This is seriously creepy.”
The eyeball ignored Zhou Mo, pointed at the glucose bag on the table, then retracted back inside itself, reminding Zhou Mo that he could put the pot directly into the fridge now. At this point, Zhou Mo couldn’t tell whether the brain was alive or dead.
He could only blankly carry the pot, open the empty fridge, and place it inside. Watching the pot of brains floating there in the barren fridge, Zhou Mo’s mood was as mixed as if he had just eaten some rotten British cuisine.
“How did I end up like this?”
After finishing everything, Zhou Mo lay on his bed and sank into deep thought. He was stunned to realize that his worldview seemed to have shattered completely.
It wasn’t just his worldview; Zhou Mo was also troubled by these mysteries.
‘It feels like the puzzles are only increasing.’
‘That familiar voice has no other clues for now; I can only hope I’ll remember it someday.’
‘And just now, that medical examination ability...’
‘Could it be that because I connected with Liao Feng’s brain, I gained the ability to self-examine?’
Zhou Mo savored the sensation of that seemingly effortless medical check again, pinching himself and then looking at the mirror. Soon, he came to a rough diagnosis:
In short: a healthy weakling.
‘But I feel like this skill is becoming vague—could it be because I’ve switched brains back? But why didn’t Liu Tianyou’s brain grant me any skills?’
‘And strangely, after switching back to Liu Tianyou’s brain, the rejection reaction disappeared...’
Why was that?
Logically, Liu Tianyou’s brain wasn’t his either, yet there was no rejection.
“I always feel like Liu Tianyou’s brain is hiding some other secret...”
Zhou Mo muttered quietly, then his expression darkened. “And the deep diver they mentioned before is quite intriguing. They said ordinary people can’t encounter subconscious monsters, but I clearly kicked one.”
Zhou Mo wanted to keep thinking, but suddenly, with a bang, his skull was lifted open. The brain, dissatisfied, pulled out an eyeball and tapped Zhou Mo’s forehead like a wooden fish.
Aren’t you going to sleep?
“Alright, alright, alright!”
“I’m going to sleep now. I still have to collect the prize money tomorrow.”
Urged by the brain, Zhou Mo felt a wave of drowsiness. He had only slept four hours earlier in the City Guard’s infirmary.
Soon, Zhou Mo lay down and fell into a deep sleep.
He slept straight until nearly noon the next day. Originally hungry, Zhou Mo was about to make do with a meal. Sleepy, he opened the fridge, only to see a brain shaped like a snail resting on a wilted leaf.
Bang!
Zhou Mo slammed the fridge shut, rubbed his face hard, then opened it again. The “snail” brain waved an eyeball at him.
What the hell!
How did this damn thing come alive too?
Bang!
The “tank’s” lid was hammered open. The brain glanced at the snail inside the fridge, squatted on Zhou Mo’s head, gave an eyeball signal, then the snail slowly crawled back into the pot to continue soaking.
Zhou Mo was seeing a brain crawl for the first time. That plump, round, sticky body inching into the pot was almost…
Cute?
“Heh.”
“I’m probably beyond saving.”
Helplessly, he closed the fridge. No one would be coming to search his place anytime soon; otherwise, if someone saw these brains, Zhou Mo’s troubles would be huge.
“Forget it, I’ll just go out for a proper meal.”
After all, he was about to collect a large sum of prize money today—might as well splurge a little.
Zhou Mo’s decision received wholehearted approval from the brain, which strongly recommended he have some sweets as dessert after eating.
Zhou Mo left his home and casually picked a nearby restaurant, ordering two dishes. While waiting for the food, he overheard a conversation from another table.
“Have you heard? Someone’s finally claiming the bounty for clues on subconscious monsters. The reward is pretty high—10,000 yuan!”
“Who doesn’t know? This morning’s broadcast and local online news are full of it. I even got a text message. It’s hard not to know.”
“By the way, who exactly is this Zhou Mo? So bold, even cooperating with the City Guard to capture a subconscious monster. I heard it’s a possession type.”
“He must be ruthless. I heard Heyuan City plans to feature him as a role model in reports…”
Zhou Mo paused, chopsticks in hand, frozen. Simultaneously, his phone rang. It was a message from Zhang Huai’an.
[Where are you? It’s about time. I’m coming to pick you up.]
[Lots of reporters are waiting for you!]
