After signing the statement, Zhou Mo got into Zhang Huai’an’s car and asked in disbelief, “I’m really in the clear?”

Zhang Huai’an looked just as puzzled, but said, “The captain said so, so you should be fine.”

“He probably took pity on you because your injuries are so serious. Go home and get some proper rest today. Tomorrow…”

After a moment’s thought, Zhang Huai’an took a business card from his pocket and handed it to Zhou Mo. “If your legs are still giving you trouble tomorrow, give me a call. I’ll pick you up and take you to the City Guard Station to collect your reward.”

Out of lingering unease, Zhang Huai’an glanced at the bandage wrapped around the back of Zhou Mo’s head.

Honestly, Zhou Mo should have been delighted to hear that there was a reward. Yet he kept gazing distractedly out the window, accepting the card with a nod. “All right. I’ll trouble you, then.”

Seeing that Zhou Mo seemed dispirited, Zhang Huai’an assumed it was simply because of his injuries and said nothing more.

All the while, however, Zhou Mo kept his attention fixed on the scenery outside. Though his face remained expressionless, he was panicking inside.

His brain was still back at the City Guard Station!

What was more, Zhou Mo could feel that the brain inside his head had already begun to grow cold. That sense that it might die at any moment had once again settled over his heart.

“So, apart from my own brain, is Liu Tianyou’s brain the only one capable of living inside my body?”

He had only spent a short day with the brain, but the difference between having one and not having one was enormous. The hollow sensation inside his skull was anything but pleasant.

Especially since the brain currently inside Zhou Mo’s head belonged to an accomplice of the Brain Eater.

Even if it did not turn cold, Zhou Mo still would not want it.

With his heart in turmoil, he finally arrived at the entrance to his residential complex. Forcing a smile, he said to Zhang Huai’an in the driver’s seat, “Thank you for the trouble. I’ll go to the City Guard Station tomorrow afternoon.”

Seeing how pale Zhou Mo looked, Zhang Huai’an asked worriedly, “Are you really all right? Forget it. I’d better take you upstairs.”

Zhou Mo had been planning to hail a cab and return to the City Guard Station himself to look for his brain, so he hurriedly waved him off. “No need. I can get home on my own.”

But Zhang Huai’an clasped Zhou Mo’s arm with a solemn expression. “No! What if you collapse out there? This is the least I can do!”

Without giving Zhou Mo any chance to refuse, Zhang Huai’an supported him by the arm all the way into the old apartment building. The security guard merely rolled his eyes in disdain and said nothing.

Only after escorting Zhou Mo to his door did Zhang Huai’an fold his arms and nod at him. “Go on in. Get some rest.”

Seeing that Zhang Huai’an intended to wait until he entered before leaving, Zhou Mo opened the door with a bitter smile and stepped inside. “Thank you.”

Zhang Huai’an smiled at him. “Don’t mention it. It’s what I should do.”

With that, he pulled the door shut behind Zhou Mo.

Zhou Mo sighed helplessly. He stood by the entrance and listened until Zhang Huai’an’s footsteps had faded into the distance. Only then did he finally relax.

First, he knocked on his skull. “Can you come out?”

The brain belonging to Liao Feng remained utterly motionless. Zhou Mo pulled a long face. “You’re not going to die inside my head, are you?”

Actually, when he thought about it carefully, going back to the City Guard Station at a time like this was not a wise choice.

Liao Feng had only just died there, and security was at its tightest. If Zhou Mo went back now, he would be walking straight into a trap.

“Forget it, forget it. Xia An isn’t someone easy to deal with. Hopefully I’ll be able to find it when I go tomorrow…”

“The only real problem is what to do about the thing in my head.”

In all his life, Zhou Mo had lost belongings and even lost people, but he had never lost a brain. And now that his brain could grow legs and run off on its own, he figured the odds of finding it again were probably lower than his chances of winning the lottery.

Sighing, he took off his coat and was just about to return to his room when he suddenly heard a commotion coming from the kitchen.

He walked over in confusion and discovered the brain pouring two bags of glucose into a pot, using its eyeballs to carry them.

Zhou Mo: !!!!!!

“You’re back! How on earth did you get back here?”

The brain glanced at Zhou Mo but did not answer. Instead, it used one eyeball to slap the other two bags of glucose on the table, as if saying: What’s wrong with your eyesight? Can’t you see I’m busy? Are you waiting for me to hammer you before you come help?

For some reason, Zhou Mo actually understood what it meant. “Oh, right. Leave it to me.”

Now that the brain had returned, the weight in Zhou Mo’s heart finally lifted. He stepped forward and helped open the bags, pouring all the mysterious glucose into the pot.

When that was done, the brain picked up the thermos beside it and poured in some hot water. It dipped an eyeball inside to test the temperature, then leaped onto the back of Zhou Mo’s head, tore off the bandage, and draped it over its own head.

Then it plunged headfirst into the pot.

“…”

“??”

“Wait! That’s my pot!”

By the time Zhou Mo realized what was happening, it was already too late. The brain was luxuriating in the pot, bubbling contentedly.

Zhou Mo stood to one side, sweating profusely. It looked as though the pot was no longer usable.

He glanced at the familiar glucose bags. “You didn’t sneak this stuff out of the City Guard Station, did you?”

The eyeball floating on the surface of the water bobbed up and down.

Zhou Mo slapped a hand over his face.

This was bad. He had thoroughly offended the City Guard Station now.

Not only had he killed a suspect inside, he had also made off with several bags of glucose. This was no longer a mere show of defiance. It was an outright provocation.

Wasn’t that a little too arrogant?

“Am I really the only person who’s piled up this many charges just for the sake of a brain?”

Muttering to himself as he watched the brain taking its bath, Zhou Mo found that, despite everything that had happened, his heart had somehow settled down.

“Forget it. Have it your way.”

Zhou Mo shook his head slightly and began considering what he had gained from the day.

First and foremost, there was no doubt that the City Guard Station was his biggest problem at present.

“That woman named Xia An definitely won’t let me off so easily. There are probably more traps waiting for me tomorrow. I absolutely cannot afford to underestimate her.”

“But more important than that is the Chuanghe Research Center—and the man I saw in Liao Feng’s memories…”

“Although the memories were extremely hazy, the moment I heard that voice, I became certain that the speaker was the other murderer.”

“From what he said, it sounded as though the Chuanghe Research Center was the real mastermind. Was my brain sent to the Chuanghe Research Center?”

Zhou Mo took out his phone and searched the internet for related terms, but he found nothing.

He scratched his head. “Looks like I can only start with that man. But apart from his voice, I don’t have a single other clue…”

“Wait!”

“His voice?”

“I think I remember that voice. I’m certain I’ve heard it somewhere before!”
