Chapter 18: The Cold-Blooded Marshal

Nian Tu admitted that, compared to their humanoid forms, she indeed preferred their beast forms. But this preference was pure and uncolored.
She really wasn’t a pervert!
“But my loss-of-control index suddenly dropped to 70, which means I received some mental soothing during my loss of control,” Xian said, his eyes vacant.
It wasn’t Nian Tu who soothed him… could it have been another female?
Fortunately, Nian Tu quickly rescued him from this terrifying speculation.
“Your loss-of-control index decreased?” Nian Tu was delighted. “Looks like my effort wasn’t in vain.”
To remove more of the black mist from the lion’s body, she had even experienced dizziness and ringing in her ears, probably due to mental exhaustion, and had to rest half a day to recover.
She described to Xian the black mist she saw on the lion and how she eliminated it. As proof, she even showed her latest physical examination results, which indicated that her current mental fluctuations were around an A grade.
Although the black mist sounded mystical, Xian believed wholeheartedly in this special kind of mental soothing.
His anxious heart finally calmed, and he took a heavy breath.
He should be grateful that Nian Tu’s mental soothing was effective enough; otherwise, enduring such tension and emotional upheaval would likely have caused him to lose control again.
After this misunderstanding, the two of them blushed and looked at each other awkwardly, their eyes meeting briefly before both quickly looking away as if shocked by an electric jolt.
Xian was the first to regain his composure. Enduring his embarrassment, he knelt and took Nian Tu’s hand. “Thank you, Nian Nian, for saving me.”
Nian Tu curled her fingertips uncomfortably. “You’re my guardian—like family. Don’t be so formal.”
But Xian looked up deeply at her, his eyes full of affection.
This feeling was so strong that Nian Tu could not ignore it. Her heart skipped a beat, and she swiftly withdrew her hand, hastily speaking before he could confess: “If you don’t want to be my guardian anymore, then let’s just be friends. Friends don’t need to be so formal, either.”
Xian understood her meaning and looked downcast. “Are you rejecting me?”
His dejected expression made Nian Tu feel guilty.
If Xian were a lion now, his tail would probably be drooping.
“Can you tell me what kind of male you like?” Despite his disappointment, Xian was not ready to give up.
If Nian Tu didn’t like him, it must be because he wasn’t good enough.
He could learn and imitate the kind of male she preferred and become the man she desired.
Nian Tu: “…”
For a moment, she truly could not come up with what kind of man she liked.

Back on Earth, she was busy working part-time jobs every day to earn money. While her classmates were experiencing first loves, she was frantically juggling jobs, her time fully occupied by work, with no heart for romance. To this day, her romantic experience was zero.
If she had to say her ideal type…
“I like a male who treats me well and is loyal to me—both in body and mind, absolutely loyal,” she could only vaguely think of these criteria.
Xian’s eyes lit up.
These were the most basic requirements for a male, and of course, he could meet them.
Seeing Xian’s renewed determination, Nian Tu rubbed her temples in headache. “But I’m not considering marriage for now.”
She had never held high hopes for marriage back on Earth. Now in this world, with the issue of differing lifespans, what if she didn’t live to 500 years? Wouldn’t that only bring heartbreak to her partner?
She didn’t want to cause trouble, so no marriage.
Though Xian wanted the status of a partner, he was willing to forgo it.
“As long as you don’t despise me or drive me away, I want to stay by your side forever, no matter what identity I have,” he said sincerely, almost pleading.
At this point, Nian Tu was speechless.
Fine, if he insisted, then so be it.
Nian Tu awkwardly changed the subject: “…How did you suddenly lose control? Did someone make you angry?”
A male’s loss-of-control index is influenced by his gene rank, beast species, personality, living environment, and other factors, gradually rising at different speeds. When a male’s emotions are sharply stimulated, the index can spike rapidly.
Xian felt a bit ashamed but was honest: “My loss-of-control index was already high, as much as 74, and it climbs easily because I have a rather hot temper.”
He quickly added, “But I would never be violent toward you, I promise!”
Nian Tu couldn’t help but laugh. “I don’t think you’re hot-tempered.”
He was always polite to her, even when losing control and transforming into a lion, he was a well-behaved lion.
If that counted as hot-tempered, then the men she’d seen on Earth must have all had bipolar disorder.
Nian Tu smiled until she heard Xian continue to confess the cause of his sudden loss of control—
“My uncle wants me to leave you and mate with another A-rank female. I refused, so we had a fight.”
Upon hearing this, Nian Tu’s smile faded.
Xian’s uncle was displeased with her…?
For a moment, she thought of Earth again, and the family where everyone was dissatisfied with her.

Grandma’s scolding and beatings, uncles and aunts’ disdain, brothers’ contempt… she had had enough.
If she were to marry in the future, she didn’t want her partner to have to choose between family and her.
Therefore, “If your uncle doesn’t like me, then you shouldn’t like me either.”
Xian was stunned.
He panicked and, without thinking, grabbed Nian Tu’s hand anxiously. “I like you, and that has nothing to do with him!”
“My uncle is naturally emotionally indifferent, his emotional fluctuations much lower than normal. He doesn’t like anyone. Don’t sentence me to death because of him—that’s unfair!”
Marshal Fei Li Lane of the Empire was like a war machine, calm and formidable. Years ago, when the Empire was invaded by other advanced civilizations, he fought on the front lines, decisive in battle, commanding with authority, earning his troops’ absolute trust and awe, known as the War God Marshal.
Countless males saw him as an idol, and even the usually reserved and proud females admired him.
But he seemed uninterested in females, never dating or marrying any. Despite their efforts, no female could catch even a glance from him, breeding resentment and earning him the nickname “Cold-blooded Marshal.”
Constantly on the battlefield and refusing female mental soothing, other males would likely have lost control long ago. But Fei remained unscathed because of his extreme emotional detachment.
Even with family, his feelings seemed like role-playing. He cared for and protected relatives out of duty, because books taught him to do so.
Towards Xian, he fulfilled his duties as an uncle but never empathized, always imposing strong arrangements and commands.
Fei was an unemotional man who sought optimal solutions to every problem.
In his view, Xian needed the mental soothing of an A-rank female, so he should find an A-rank female to mate with. He could not comprehend Xian’s determination to choose Nian Tu at first sight, even if it meant risking death.
Nian Tu was surprised to learn this about Xian’s uncle.
Xian had long harbored resentment towards him, and now said, “He is who he is, and I am who I am. He has no right to interfere with my feelings. Even if you truly had no mental power, I wouldn’t listen to him.”
“Besides, you can awaken A-rank mental power. If he knows that, he definitely won’t oppose me pursuing you anymore.”
As he spoke, Xian opened his light brain and sent a video invitation to Fei Li.
Before Nian Tu could stop him, the video connected, and she found herself unwilling to face this elder who disliked her.
She moved away and stayed out of the video frame.
Fei answered, only seeing his nephew Xian, unaware that Nian Tu was nearby.
