Chapter 55: Psychological Evaluation

Wu Xian held the Flying Blade Curse in his hand. If he wished, he could have killed the four agents, including Jin Mo, without hesitation. But who could be certain? After avenging Xu Ming’s four family members, would this blessed land come to an end?
This sanctuary appeared gentle on the surface but harbored something eerie deep within. Wu Xian preferred to delay avenging Xu Ming’s family rather than blatantly defy the order of this sacred place.
Wu Xian soothed them for quite some time. Only then did the shadows of the four malevolent spirits retreat back into his body. He exhaled deeply and squeezed into the car, which was now packed with ten people. The vehicle moved slower than before.
Along the way, He Ya, Xu Xiaoyan, and the other four ghosts pressed themselves close to the criminal, their eyes filled with venomous hatred. If looks could kill, this culprit would have perished dozens of times over.
It wasn’t that they were unwilling to take revenge themselves; at this moment, apart from Wu Xian, they had no means of interfering with anything else.
…
Early the next morning, Wu Xian arrived with a sullen expression at the entrance of Xianwei City Psychiatric Hospital. Behind him were four burly agents escorting the criminal.
After Wu Xian had brought the criminal back to the Investigation Bureau the previous night, the culprit was held in solitary confinement and interrogated by designated personnel. Wu Xian wasn’t allowed to sit in on the interrogation or even be alone with the criminal.
Throughout the entire night, he was dragged by the Chief Inspector to various ceremonies for commendations and even participated in a press conference. The Investigation Bureau was treating him as a model, making him the hero of Xianwei City.
By morning, the Chief Inspector summoned him over. The criminal had been rambling incoherently, claiming he had only killed malevolent spirits and needed a psychiatric evaluation. According to bureau protocol, the detective who arrested the suspect must accompany the evaluation process.
The old Chief Inspector had also emphasized that the doctor need not know any additional information beyond signing a report confirming the suspect had no mental illness.
So, Wu Xian found himself back at the familiar psychiatric hospital.
The two of them waited in the interrogation room. This was the only chance Wu Xian had been alone with the criminal since last night, and now he could finally ask some questions.
But just as he was about to speak, a doctor appeared hesitantly at the door, testing the waters before finally gathering courage to enter the room.
Wu Xian swallowed his words. The warning from the spirits within him cautioned against acting beyond the detective’s authority or disclosing too much information to the doctor.

Wu Xian greeted first: “My surname is Xu, Detective. How should I address you, Doctor?”
“Just call me Dr. Wei,” the doctor replied politely as he took a seat.
“May I ask the name of this patient...” Dr. Wei inquired.
Wu Xian shrugged: “Sorry, the suspect’s information must remain confidential.”
Dr. Wei didn’t mind much. He arranged the case files and said, “Very well, let’s begin.”
…
The assessment was over quickly. The doctor didn’t seem very professional—he asked only a few simple questions before concluding that the suspect surnamed Jia had no mental issues. Wu Xian didn’t bother to challenge the result since it was exactly the answer he wanted.
Yet, despite completing the task, a nagging doubt arose in Wu Xian’s mind. The scene before him felt strangely familiar, as if he had witnessed it somewhere before.
After a moment, he laughed at himself for being overly suspicious. Conducting psychiatric evaluations on rambling suspects had been a long-standing protocol at the bureau. Wu Xian had brought countless criminals here; it would be odd if he weren’t familiar with the procedure.
After the evaluation, Wu Xian and the four burly agents escorted the suspect back to the bureau.
A few hours later, prison officials would arrive to transfer the criminal to a special prison. After some time there, he would be brought to court for sentencing, followed by execution.
Having resolved a major case, Wu Xian was granted some time off.
But how could Wu Xian possibly rest? He could not allow the criminal to enter that prison. Once inside, it would be much harder for Wu Xian to kill him.
Even though the criminal’s fate after imprisonment was death, Wu Xian could not wait that long. Moreover, even if the culprit were executed a hundred times, it would not be by Wu Xian’s hand and thus would not count as true revenge.
Therefore, Wu Xian chose to act while the criminal was being transported to the prison.
This was his best opportunity.
First, he could avoid those four extraordinary super agents; second, the prison lay outside the city, with a stretch of deserted road in between, making it easier for Wu Xian to operate.
He hurriedly prepared, parking his Bi Guandi electric car near the bureau, waiting for the transport vehicle to set off.
Before long, Wu Xian spotted the transport car.
In this world, transport vehicles were far less secure than in reality—not fully enclosed and surrounded by glass windows. Because of this, Wu Xian confirmed the suspect was indeed inside.

Wu Xian followed the transport vehicle, lowered the rearview mirror inside the car, hesitated a moment, then spoke:
“It won’t take long. I can help you get your revenge.”
“When we reach a deserted stretch of road, I’ll find a way to force the transport vehicle to stop, and then personally kill the culprit. That will be your revenge.”
“But before that…”
“Can we make a deal?”
The malevolent spirits of Xu Ming’s family demanded not only the killer’s death but also the massacre of the entire culprit’s family.
If this had been Wu Xian’s first sacred place, he would have carried out their wishes without hesitation.
Back then, he believed everything in the sanctuary was an illusion, like playing a game where killing NPCs carried no guilt.
But since seeing the old lady from the welfare home appear in reality, Wu Xian’s perspective changed.
The natives of the sanctuary were as real as people in the outside world—living beings. Wu Xian himself might just be a native of this land, equal in humanity to them. Killing here, while not against real-world laws, was no different in nature from murder outside.
After all, he wasn’t truly Dr. Xu Ming.
He harbored no deep hatred for those four culprits and had no desire to annihilate the entire Xu family in Dr. Xu’s name.
More importantly, Wu Xian felt a vague unease about slaughtering an entire family. His instincts warned that fulfilling such a demand might trap him in some snare.
Although there were plenty of reasons to refuse, if the four malevolent spirits insisted and refused to lift the curse, Wu Xian would have no choice but to steel himself and proceed. No principle or hesitation mattered more than his own life.
“What deal do you want to make?”
He Ya, sitting in the passenger seat with a hungry gaze fixed on the road ahead, suddenly stiffened and turned to look at Wu Xian. The two veteran agents wore fierce expressions, while only Xu Xiaoyan looked somewhat normal.
Wu Xian tentatively said, “The culprit’s a madman; this case might have nothing to do with his family. Could we spare them? I can burn down his house, or…”
Before he could finish, a sharp pain shot through his body, as if someone was clawing at his internal organs.
He immediately knelt down, sliding to the ground.
“Of course, I’m just saying this. How could I not avenge my family’s death? I…”
“Sure, why not!” He Ya suddenly smiled eerily.
