Chapter 49 Speculation

The class monitor was quite bold, pressing his ear against the thick wooden door and whispering, “It sounds like the principal is arguing with someone... or debating something?”
“Let’s wait a moment.”
“Alright.”
The two sat on the bench outside the door but didn’t have to wait long before they heard the door lock click open. A familiar figure emerged from the office.
That frail body, barely able to fill out a formal suit, was probably unique in the entire school—a person who had completely abandoned physical training to immerse himself in books.
“Teacher Guo.”
Both the class monitor and Luo Di stood up and called out his name simultaneously. Teacher Guo pushed up his glasses, trying to get a clear look at their faces. “Oh, students from Class Five... Wu Wen and Luo Di. I graded your exams—95 and 86 respectively.
“Though your scores aren’t the highest, I can see your own understanding in your answers, rather than rote responses. Maintaining independent thought is a good thing; keep it up.”
“Thank you, Teacher Guo,” said the class monitor, while Luo Di simply nodded slightly.
Teacher Guo waved them off and took the elevator down from that floor.
The two followed and approached the principal’s office. Fingers rapped lightly on the wooden door. Upon seeing the two energetic students, the principal’s expression immediately changed, and he stepped forward to shake their hands.
The reason for summoning them was straightforward.
Luo Di, a high school student, had exhibited proficiency in using the “Cornered Object” during exams—a rare skill.
The school promptly reviewed Luo Di’s file and discovered that during winter break, the two had assisted investigators in handling an “anomalous incident,” earning high praise from the Investigation Bureau in their records.
The only oddity was that such a notable achievement was usually publicized openly, but their deeds remained quietly noted only in their personal files.
Regardless, this was unprecedented in the history of Fourth High School.
Even if some students had previously assisted the Investigation Bureau, it was typically limited to providing intelligence, not direct engagement with anomalous events, combating shapeshifters, and escaping danger as they had done.
The principal granted them the highest privileges within the school, including but not limited to:
Full tuition refunds along with social aid bonuses,
Personalized nutrition plans,
All campus expenses waived,
Unlimited access to specialized equipment at any time.
In essence, the school’s resources were being heavily allocated to these two students.
After all, based on last night’s performance, they still had significant room for improvement. If they could advance further before graduation, they might even surpass the top students from First High School.
Such success would greatly elevate the school’s reputation, impacting social status, teaching resources, and more.
Naturally, their homeroom teacher, Ruan Zhijun, also received a considerable salary increase as a result.

“In short, for your final semester, the school will do its best to meet any needs you have on campus.
“That’s it for now—hurry back to class. I won’t keep you any longer. The bonuses and refunds will be transferred to your accounts today.”
“Thank you, Principal.”
The class monitor expressed gratitude and prepared to leave but was surprised to find Luo Di hesitating.
“Principal, before we came, it sounded like you and Teacher Guo had some disagreement?”
Luo Di’s directness startled the class monitor, who thought it unusual to speak so frankly with the principal. However, the principal was easygoing and didn’t mind.
“Did you overhear that outside? I was merely addressing some shortcomings in Teacher Guo’s teaching.
“You know this is a crucial semester for students. Even if physical education is a smaller part, some students with weaker physiques rely on this subject to clear the academic threshold.
“Teacher Guo often prefers to teach what he deems important but which doesn’t necessarily improve grades. I understand these lessons may be useful, but right now, improving scores is the priority.
“Besides, according to last semester’s student feedback survey, his rating was the lowest, or I wouldn’t have called him in.”
Luo Di asked further, “Is he going to be fired?”
“Not at all. Teacher Guo is very capable; his teaching methods just need adjustment.
“When he was a student, he was somewhat similar to you.
“His physical education was always poor, but he consistently ranked first academically and even published several essays in city and national journals during high school.
“He was invited to university before graduating—truly a genius in the intellectual realm.”
The principal’s explanation left Luo Di momentarily stunned, and even the class monitor, who was about to leave, became interested and stepped closer.
Then Luo Di’s next question was even more startling:
“With such outstanding talent, why would he return to teach here?”
The class monitor discreetly tugged on Luo Di’s sleeve, alarmed by his boldness.
The principal’s expression shifted suddenly but was quickly composed.
“Ahem, our Fourth High School can proudly claim to have produced students like you two.
“Given the current national situation, pursuing academics is already a narrow path. Returning to one’s alma mater as a teacher is quite common.
“By the way, he’s not your academic subject teacher, right?”
“No.”
“That’s good. Enough chit-chat—I have plenty of work to do. You’d better get back to class.”
“Goodbye, Principal!” The class monitor waved cheerfully before pulling Luo Di out of the office.
As they walked back to the classroom, the class monitor jogged ahead but then turned on tiptoe and walked backwards, facing Luo Di.
“You’re acting differently. I remember before, when you received praise from the grade director, you never said a word and left as fast as possible.
“But this time, you actively spoke to the principal so much? And your conversation skills are...”
“Just curious about Teacher Guo,” Luo Di said meaningfully.
Wu Wen forced a disgusted expression. “Hey, isn’t Teacher Tan from our class good enough?”

Luo Di replied with deeper meaning, “Class monitor, you know what I mean.”
She immediately grasped the implication.
“‘Cornered thinking’? No way. This is Fourth High School, one of the top schools in Jupiter City. Even academic teachers are on the official staff with good benefits.
“Besides, I often visit the office. Although Teacher Guo isn’t talkative and often lost in his books, he has no conflicts with other teachers.
“His teaching style has always been like this—some students like it, others don’t.”
“It was just a fleeting feeling earlier.
“But after hearing the principal’s response, there shouldn’t be any problem.”
“Don’t worry! Even if your theory were true, this is the school. If anything happens, the physical education teachers would be the first to shield students and effectively eliminate any shapeshifters.
“Alright, let’s hurry up and take you to see the school doctor.”
[School Medical Office]
Located in the middle section of the teaching building, roughly the size of six classrooms across two floors.
At least three resident physicians or higher-level doctors are always on duty to serve the students.
Equipped with expensive advanced instruments, it ensures that any injuries during physical education classes receive timely treatment without lasting effects and provides comprehensive monthly psychological evaluations.
“Another injury? Was it from last night’s test? Why are you coming now?”
A middle-aged female doctor with brown hair and a stern face immediately focused on Luo Di, seeming quite familiar with him.
The class monitor quickly explained, “No, Director Hu... Luo Di felt dizzy while going upstairs just now. If I weren’t here, he might have fallen and hit his head.”
Director Hu was the most senior doctor at Fourth High School and head of the medical office. Today was her scheduled shift.
“Sit down.”
The doctor first took his pulse, then used various instruments for a thorough examination.
“Director Hu, how is it?” The class monitor was even more anxious than Luo Di.
“Everything’s normal—perfectly normal. Remember before your senior year you always came alone? You were almost malnourished during monthly checkups, so I prescribed a lot of vitamin C.
“You’re much better now. At least from my perspective, there’s no physical problem.
“It’s probably related to overexertion from last night’s physical test. I recommend taking half a day off and going home to rest.”
“Thank you.”
As Luo Di stood to leave, Director Hu added:
“Your eyes look brighter than before. I used to see you as listless and lifeless, but now you look more like a high school student.
“Since your health has improved and you’re now two people, remember to take good care of yourselves.”
Luo Di didn’t reply directly but nodded slightly and headed for the exit, while the class monitor turned back politely and bowed in thanks.
