Chapter Thirty-Six: The Divine Soul Descends!
The Corpse King’s avatar is incredibly powerful. Even as an immature fourth-level entity, it possesses an abnormal, impenetrable defense. If it were fully cultivated and the Corpse King’s soul were to descend into it, it would be even more monstrous!
No, it must be destroyed now, before it reaches maturity!
However, Tang Zhen was at a loss as to how to destroy the avatar. The monster detector had already indicated that the avatar was impervious to blades and bullets. He suspected that even if he were to use his incomparably sharp purple short sword, it might not inflict the slightest harm. A fourth-level corpse commander had survived a violent, close-range explosion unscathed, so how could the Corpse King’s avatar be any different?
The detector had suggested that to harm this monster, a soul-based attack was necessary. But he possessed no such means. Yet, did an avatar that had not yet been possessed by the Corpse King’s soul even have a soul?
Tang Zhen frowned in deep thought for a moment, then his expression brightened, and he quickly opened an application on his phone.
The Adjustable Neural-Organ Infrasound Generator offered two modes, corresponding to different targets, with adjustable hertz settings. Tang Zhen narrowed his eyes as he read the description. He had previously looked up the principles of infrasound—sound waves with a frequency below 20 hertz. Certain frequencies could resonate with human organs, causing severe damage, organ deformation, displacement, or even rupture, potentially leading to death.
The "black technology" from the app store was naturally extraordinary, far more lethal and efficient than standard infrasound weapons. It was like a caged tiger; using such a device in his original world would undoubtedly cause a terrifying catastrophe.
It worked on humans, but would it work against the Corpse King’s avatar? Tang Zhen hesitated for a heartbeat before his gaze sharpened. No matter, he would try!
He locked onto the target, set it to automatic capture and analysis mode to determine the frequency that would affect the avatar, and then initiated a continuous, directional attack.
As Tang Zhen activated the generator, a sound wave—inaudible to the human ear—struck the corpse in the blood pool. Fortunately, this technology allowed for directional attacks and protected the user; otherwise, Tang Zhen might have been struck himself without realizing it. Seeing the weapon was active, Tang Zhen stared at the avatar, waiting for a reaction.
Unfortunately, after half a minute, there was no response. Tang Zhen sighed in disappointment; it seemed even this weapon was powerless against the impenetrable avatar. If he couldn't destroy the avatar, he would at least blow up the blood pool! Even delaying the cultivation process would be a blow to the Corpse Race.
Just as this thought crossed his mind, he suddenly noticed the avatar in the blood pool twitch slightly. A trickle of blood spilled from the corner of its mouth, and thin, hair-like crimson lines appeared across its perfect surface. Even from its private parts, a blood-red liquid began to discharge.
"Ha! It’s working!" Tang Zhen felt a surge of joy and prepared to maintain the assault.
However, he suddenly felt a faint, oppressive atmosphere in the air, making it difficult to breathe. His hair stood on end, as if a pair of incredibly cruel eyes were staring at him through the infinite void, wishing to tear him to pieces. The sensation was agonizing, and it took a desperate effort to shake off the nightmare-like feeling.
At that moment, through his map view, he vaguely saw a crimson thread extending from the void and piercing the avatar’s forehead. Before he could investigate further, the avatar lying atop the black altar opened its eyes, revealing a pair of blood-red pupils.
Tang Zhen, who had been observing the thread, met that blood-red gaze directly.
"Boom!"
Tang Zhen felt his brain rattle, and he stood frozen. What terrifying eyes! Just one look, and he felt as though he had fallen into boundless terror. Simultaneously, his phone projected a vision into his mind.
It was a world composed entirely of the Corpse Race. All life had withered; there was no grass or greenery, only the scent of death and decay. In this forsaken world lived countless members of the Corpse Race. They had once been living beings, but after angering legendary gods, their entire planet’s vitality was extinguished, leaving their corpses to never rot. Later, for unknown reasons, these immortal corpses gained sentience and the ability to cultivate, calling themselves the Corpse Race. Over endless ages, they warred and slaughtered until eight great Corpse Kings emerged, each dominating a territory.
The corpse monsters that entered the Tower World were subordinates of the Spirit-Brain Corpse King, who had discovered the method to enter this world through ancient, secret texts. Because of the mysterious power of this world, any outsider would have a "brain bead" formed in their mind, losing their original consciousness and becoming a monster. This power was so immense that even the Spirit-Brain Corpse King could not resist it; if its true body entered, it would inevitably become a monster.
The Spirit-Brain Corpse King had found the only solution: use the body of a native of this world to cultivate an avatar, allowing its soul to descend and inhabit it. This would allow it to command its army to plunder the world's resources and turn all living beings into corpse slaves.
The Corpse King had expended vast resources to send these monsters into this world, momentarily preserving the consciousness of the Corpse Lord. The Lord and its troops were the vanguard, building altars and cultivating the avatar in preparation for the Corpse King’s arrival.
The box Tang Zhen had stolen previously contained a drop of the Corpse King’s essence blood, used to nurture the avatar. After the box was stolen, the Corpse Lord had to use its own blood as a substitute, resulting in an avatar far weaker than one cultivated with the King's essence.
As Tang Zhen processed this, his head throbbed, and the continuous stream of images vanished.
"Hmph!"
A familiar, soft grunt echoed in his ears, causing his chest to constrict, and he spat out a mouthful of blood. The infrasound generator forced itself to shut down, and his body slumped into the blood pool.
"To be able to harm my avatar and read my memories—what a filthy and surprising creature you are."
The words came from the avatar’s mouth in a cold, ruthless tone. Its blood-red eyes stared at Tang Zhen with a mixture of surprise and utter contempt, as if looking at an ant. Having spoken, the avatar closed its eyes and remained still.
However, the tentacles of the eight statues in the blood pool began to slither silently toward Tang Zhen. The pool surged with countless heads, each bearing an expression of extreme agony and malice. Watching them approach, Tang Zhen, lying in the pool, felt a surge of urgency and pushed off the bottom with his arms to stand.
As his palm touched the floor of the pool, he felt something unusual—it felt as if the bottom was covered in smooth, pebble-like objects. At the same moment, his phone vibrated gently against his chest.
The situation was all too familiar. By now, Tang Zhen knew exactly what was covering the bottom of the pool.
"You dare hurt me? I'll make you pay!"
Covered in blood, Tang Zhen roared at his phone, "Absorb! Absorb everything for me!"
"Boom!"
Following the command, the phone began to absorb with astonishing speed. As it frantically drew in the energy, the brain beads lining the bottom of the pool vanished in an instant.
The eight black statues, which had been extending their tentacles toward Tang Zhen, shrieked in unison. All their tentacles flew from the pool, and countless heads swarmed toward Tang Zhen. At the same time, the black altar erupted with a deafening blast!
