Wen Jiu stared at the enormous cosmic beast before her. Its carbon-black body was riddled with numerous cracks, within which flowed a molten, lava-like red liquid. Four sharp claws pressed against the ground, while a slender tail arched high into the air.

In appearance, it resembled a lizard she was familiar with—only this lizard had been magnified countless times.

"Student No. 1318, please prepare for combat," the system’s cold, emotionless voice announced. Wen Jiu maneuvered her mech a few steps closer to the Flame Serpent.

Just as she selected a handgun, the Flame Serpent spewed a scorching jet of fire at her. With a swift roll, Wen Jiu narrowly evaded the blaze.

Although she knew this was a simulated pilot exercise, the sensation of being linked to the mech felt startlingly real. Even the cosmic beast’s attacks were unnervingly authentic; as the flames drew near, she could almost feel their suffocating heat.

Wen Jiu quickly fired two shots at the Flame Serpent. Though unfamiliar with firearms, the mech’s built-in aiming system ensured every bullet hit its mark.

However, the Flame Serpent’s outer shell was tough—impervious to blades and bullets alike—except for the soft tail, its vulnerable spot.

The serpent lunged again, releasing a massive fireball from its jagged-toothed maw.

Wen Jiu retreated just in time to dodge the inferno, then switched to a compound bow.

She had never trained with guns, but she was no stranger to archery—though her previous practice was merely for hunting wild game in the mountains.

The weapon interface lacked a traditional recurve bow, but the compound bow seemed close enough in form and function.

Confident, she released an arrow, but the system couldn’t assist in aiming with this weapon, so her first shot missed wildly.

Undeterred, she quickly distanced herself and took aim at the serpent’s tail again.

Wen Jiu had always been intelligent and quick to learn, especially when it came to new skills.

After a few arrows, she grasped the technique.

Dodging another fireball, she seized the moment while the Flame Serpent prepared to unleash its fiery breath, and calmly sent an arrow flying toward its raised tail.

This time, the arrow struck true, embedding itself in the vulnerable tail.

The Flame Serpent, mid-attack charge, collapsed instantly. Wen Jiu exhaled in relief.

"Congratulations, Student No. 1318, simulation combat complete," the system intoned.

As the notification sounded, the vivid scene before her faded, replaced by darkness.

"Simulation mech piloting concluded; the hatch will now open. Farewell," the system announced.

At once, the cockpit lights brightened, the previously glowing buttons dimmed, and the sealed hatch slowly swung open.

"Well done," Zhang Heling remarked as Wen Jiu stepped out of the cockpit.

"Indeed," Wen Jiu replied confidently. She was no ordinary novice—once a promising cultivator who had faced countless hardships.

Zhang Heling paused, surprised to hear such self-assurance. It was his first time hearing it from a newcomer, but perhaps it was natural; young recruits often displayed fearless bravado.

"Take a seat over there and rest," he said, gesturing toward a chair behind him.

Wen Jiu sat down and closed her eyes, gathering strength. Piloting the mech was mentally taxing, even in simulation, and she already felt fatigued.

She was the first to finish the training; the other students were still locked in combat within their cockpits.

About ten minutes later, Zhang Heling returned, accompanied by a male student.

Wen Jiu looked up and felt a vague familiarity.

"Why is it you?" the newcomer said before she could recall who he was.

Fei Qingyu had always been confident in his abilities. Before enrolling, he had leveraged family connections to gain experience in mech piloting and supernatural powers.

Yet that morning, he had lost in physical training to Wen Jiu, becoming only the second student to finish the session.

Now, again, he found himself trailing behind her in mech piloting.

Wen Jiu glanced at him, remembering this arrogant boy from earlier that day.

But since they were not close and he wore a sullen expression, she did not greet him warmly.

"Hmph," Fei Qingyu snorted coldly, folding his arms as he sat as far from Wen Jiu as possible. He refused to face the girl who had shattered his pride.

"She must have studied secretly! Otherwise, how could she have beaten me?" he mused bitterly, stealing a glance at Wen Jiu, who remained with her eyes closed, resting.

As the class neared its end, other students emerged one after another from the simulation cockpits.

Unlike the energetic Wen Jiu and Fei Qingyu, their faces were etched with exhaustion. Had Zhang Heling not been watching, they might have collapsed into their chairs for a deep sleep.

"The greatest challenge in mech piloting is mental endurance," Zhang Heling said sternly, hands clasped behind his back. "Several students failed training due to insufficient mental strength. The academy has facilities to enhance your mental endurance—you should use them."

"Training ends here for today. Rest well, everyone."

With that, the students dispersed from the classroom.

Wen Jiu, still mentally drained, walked slowly toward the cafeteria.

As she stepped out of the teaching building, she heard footsteps behind her.

"Hey, are you heading to train your mental strength?" Fei Qingyu called out.

His elder brother was a graduate of the 3047 Academy and had shared much about the academy before Fei’s enrollment. Thus, Fei Qingyu was well-informed about campus affairs.

Noticing Wen Jiu seemed to be going toward the mental endurance training room, he grew suspicious.

He never expected such a young girl to be so diligent.

Wen Jiu, tired and irritable, snapped coldly, "I’m going to work at the cafeteria."

When exhausted, Wen Jiu spoke less. Already drained, having to deal with this arrogant boy only worsened her mood.

She quickened her pace, unwilling to engage further.

But Fei Qingyu didn’t believe her and continued to follow, determined to find out the truth.

Wen Jiu ignored him, focused solely on finishing her shift and returning to her dorm to rest.

Her mental stamina was still weak—just a short stint piloting the simulated mech left her utterly fatigued.

It fell short of her own high standards. She resolved to find time to train her mental endurance.

With this in mind, she slowly reached the cafeteria entrance and headed straight for Window 18.

Fei Qingyu, trailing behind, grew increasingly puzzled. Could she really be here to work?

Indeed, Wen Jiu was here to work.

Fei Qingyu stood stunned in place.

He watched as Wen Jiu entered the kitchen, greeted a sweet-faced girl, then skillfully donned an apron and mask, moving with the ease of a seasoned worker.
